Is your favorite your best?

The Erickson with the cap bolsters is an all-time classic.

Jeff, that knife is a Syracuse Knife Co., cheapo Camillus, with modifications made by me and perfectly executed by Ken. It is one of my all time favorite knives of any genre! We had a great time collaborating on this knife and that only adds to the pride of ownership. I carry this knife 4-5 days a week and don't even look at my others when home. Ken is a master and this is without a doubt one of the finest slip joints I have ever owned!

My favorite changes weekly but definitely aren't my best. They range from the latest and greatest from GEC/CSC/Queen or a $10 vintage user I scored off the bay.

I have a J. Oeser that is my nicest knife, hands down.

I think my "favorite" knife is my absolute cheapest knife. Opinel #7 carbon, with a tapered handle.

I carry it everywhere, even if I am carrying the J. Oeser.

I usually have 4 or 5 knives with me, because I am OCD, but the Opinel has bumped several other edc's out of rotation.

Three of my "favorite" after spending a full day Branding, banding, cutting and tagging 250 calves.

Before the blood and dirt.

Hard to pick a favorite, but these are the two I carry all the time.

But the clean stag or ivory ones might be a favorite.

That's awesome Fausto. I'm glad your first custom experience turned out so well.

I'm glad as well ;)
Back to the topic, my experience with this knife is teaching me alot about the things that push a knife towards the "favourite" status.
The whole process of discussing this knife with Jared had a great influence on it, just as much as the beauty and craftmanship of this knife.
Nonetheless, I assume that the determining factor has been putting it in my pocket the very day I got it, without thinking twice, and using it as any knife. This way, the "fear" about using a custom knife was left behind in the very beginning, leaving the pleasure of using a knife made to my specs for good reasons.
If a favourite knife is the one that gets carried the most, it's also likely that the knife that sees more pocket time will eventually become your favourite, cause that's how our mind binds emotionally to a tool. I suspect that, if I had carried this knife only at Sundays, using my other knives the other days (and cutting more with them than with my Oeser), I would be telling a different story right now, and my Whaler would still be my best, but possibly not my favourite.
Anyone else sharing this thought?

I think that happened with me also. I started carrying my #73 because it was a gift from my wife, and I smiled whenever I thought about it. Such a beautiful, thoughtful gift. Eventually it became the knife I reached for in the morning and my "better" knives were reserved for the weekend. As it happened though, this knife became my most treasured and I think that the act of using and and carrying it strengthened an already present sentimental attachment.

In short, yes.

but I NEED to get my hands on one of these - preferably a 3.5inch shadow! ;)
As it is part of my trifecta, and the only knife I'm missing from the trio

Said it before, but I'll say it again. That Oeser is my favorite slippie that I have ever seen. Hands down.

Don, it's no fair providing the "colorful" steel yourself!! ;) :D
Mike Roebuck got that train rolling. Been a fun ride too! :D

Don, that stag shadow is awesome!

Thanks! It has titanium liners and hardly any weight. Gets used hard also.

Thanks! A favorite knife of mine for sure. I will make more of the pattern and do some shadows too.

No, here's my favorite. By favorite I mean most aesthetically pleasing.
Here's my best. The blades are much more accommodating for general EDC tasks. It's also among the most ergonomic traditional slipjoints I've had.

i love that buck. is that a 301 or 309?

Well said Pinnah regarding not letting your possessions own you. I don't have very expensive knives right now my best is probably an unused mini grip that sits in a tool box. It's done that for a years now before I even knew that it was a "mini grip." I have a sentimental knife that was $15. I'm very attached to it because it was my first knife purchase after discovering blade forum. And I hated it because it was cheap and it didn't open so well. And as kamagong said I abused the crap out of it, and it took it and said give me more. The little CRKT Drifter was built so well and it turned my head around 180 degrees about what makes a great knife. Great knives cut things! And that's it. Then I got an Opinel and all of a sudden I realized how fond I was of such low end things that cut stuff.

So I am trying to not let my possessions own me. I have to fight my demons though...with that said I would let one of those Oeser knives own me like a cheap ten dollar prostitute on a corner anytime! Those darn Oesers are playing with my emotions they're so pretty!!!! I want! I want!
