Is Your Most Expensive Knife Your Favorite Knife?

As a person just now (at 48 yo) finding the enjoyment of knife carrying and collecting, I'm curious to know:

Is your most expensive knife is your favorite knife? Why or why not?

I don't really have any 'expensive' knives, a Rat II ($27), Robin II ($20), Cryo (generous gift), Pazoda II ($13), a pair of Swiss Army knives/couple Case knives/few no-name knives (cost unknown).

However, every morning when I go to my Spyderco Pocket Holder to choose a knife for the workday, I always seem to grab the Robin II. It's super sharp, a breeze (and fun) to open, the perfect size, a great weight in pocket, and after work when I use the clip it's rock solid.

Love the flipper, look, and weight in hand of the Cryo (but a bit heavy in my work khakis). Love the smooth opening and sharp cutting of the Rat II (little long to be easily concealed in my work khakis). Love the fact that the Pazoda II disappears in my small blue jeans pocket and the smooth opening (but feel I need something a little larger for EDC). Love the versatility of the Swiss Army knives (but without fingernails I have problems getting all the tools out). Love the Case knives because they're old and my father bought them for me (but again no fingernails makes opening them a problem). Love the no-names because....well, actually I don't.

Look forward to hearing your responses.

My most expensive knives seldom or never get used and they tend to be larger knives. This does not stop me from wanting and buying more large knives. It's a hobby.

I have lots of $100+ knives and I use a Vic SAK which runs about $30 these days. When I first got that model it ran about $22.

Like 22-rimfire my most expensive knives arent carried as often as well.
But my favorite atm is a sprint S35VN Paramilitary 2.

I went through a phase where I was buying mid techs and got some in the 400$+ range for folders. Then and now, my favorite folder and most prized folder carry is still a PM2! It just works the best for my needs and my ergos.

When it comes to fix blades, though, my most expensive ones are my favorites. I regularly carry a fixed blade from fiddleback forge because nothing else compares to them for me!

My favorite carry is my HK Turmoil OTF knife and also the most expensive of my collection. I only carry it when I wear jeans because it is very slim and too easy to lose wearing loose pockets. I never use the clips anyway. It is the one at the right end.

I like to carry the second from right a lot. It has some weight to it that I'm aware of it in my pocket. It's also comfy to hold and use. I like it a lot. Very inexpensive knife but cool as heck. The middle two I like to carry as they are cool as heck too.

I carry one of the left two fixed blades in sheaths on my left when I open carry my HK USP 9mm on my right.

Well sort off. My current favorite for use is a HAP40 Delica. I have lots of other knives that I like too that are 3x the price but the steel in this one just makes me want to use it.

But it can't replace a big belt knife for example so when I need that a Winkler becomes my favorite.

For me this is a long trip with peaks and valleys in prices so I don't focus too much on that. I know some other folks have the mindset they're climbing Everest to reach their grail but then when they get there what happens next?

Yes and no. My Freeman 451 BLF is close to my most expensive knife and it is my favorite for fondling, flipping and messing with, but when there are things to be cut I more often reach for my Manix 2 XL due to the superior cutting geometry.

Yup. It's also my main carry.

My favorite knife is the Benchmade AFCK in M2-HSS. Not my most expensive knife, but it's got that priceless tag because of sentiment.

My most expensive knife has also been my EDC for the last 4 years, until recently, when I got my Inkosi. I LOVE my Seamus Knives Cracked Uber. The blade is made of Stellite 6K, and it has been the perfect EDC for me.

My most expensive is my Sukhoi 2.0 with Josh's mirror edge on it and I freakin love it.......but the one I carry most is my first 'real' knife......Benchmade 940 with DOAT scales!

I have a few favorites. Mostly Bucks in the $100 range. One of my favorites is my most expensive. An Extrema Ratio RAO.

If I had a Rockstead it might be LOL... ;) I see Sutherland has beat me to it... :p:cool::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

The most I've ever had into one blade was about a grand for a Busse NMFBM and sheath; it was supposed to be mint but ended up with a slight mark on the end of the pommel that went through the finish to the steel so it was destined to be a user. ;)

One time I used it to chop an old aluminum toboggan in half (side to side, not lengthwise LOL) so it definitely wasn't a safe queen. I still regret getting rid of that knife; it was not my favourite but near the top of the list LOL. ;)

This Naga Solid by William Nease is most most expensive right now and I would say it is my favourite as I've never owned anything that comes close to it in terms of chopping ability and beefiness. Definitely my baby but I don't baby it LOL. :foot::rolleyes:;)

I don't have any real expensive knives, about $140 tops. Until my junkie stepson stole it, my BM Mini Barrage was my favorite knife, not the most expensive, but up there, and cost enough that it will be hard for me to replace. So this week, my favorite knives are a Marttiini lynx Lumberjack and a Rough Rider Improved Muskrat.

My most expensive knife is a CR Small Sebenza. I bought it because...well...everyone says you really ought to own a Sebenza if you're a serious knife guy. Okay. I bought it but, really, it's far from my favorite knife. Don't misunderstand, it's really a great knife and I'm glad I bought it but I have yet to seriously carry it for any length of time. It just doesn't work for me as well as several other less expensive knives.

I don't think I've ever broke $500 on a knife yet. I'm close, in fact with aftermarket hardware I'm probably over $500 on my XM-18. I've got a couple of Begg Steelcrafts, several Reates, a couple CRK's, several ZT's including two flavors of 0392LE, a G10 Shiro Tabargan (probably the most "expensive" knife I own except I picked it up on the secondary market at a nice discount, a Strider, a couple of CKF's, several Spydies in the >$100 range but no real LE's...same with Benchmade. I've got a bunch of money tied up in my Skyline collection but that's spread out of 20'ish knives, oh...and a Kershaw Ruby...I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of at the moment. I'm about to make the next step up in knives...I'm going to skip 4-$200 knives and try out a Rockstead ;)

In terms of favorite, dang...that's hard. I don't have one single knife that I carry significantly more than the others. I have a rotation of 64 of my favorite folders. I have no safe queens, but my use is a lot lighter than it used to be. Sometimes I pick up a high value knife, like a RealSteel H6-S1 and it's my favorite knife because I'm blown away at how well it's made and designed for $30. Sometimes its my Begg mini Bodega because it's just a joy to play with. Sometimes its my Zaan, just because the marvel of simple engineering that CRK's stand for.

So, I guess my answer is SOMETIMES my most expensive knife is my favorite knife. SOMETIMES it isn't. I'm a faithless bastid!

My two most expensive knives cost $300 each, and they are my work knives. Although I like them a lot, and although they are long discontinued, I regard them as replaceable (with other knives). They are not at the top of my personal "treasure" list (though they are on that list).

On the other hand, I have two knives that cost under $7 each (under seven dollars each), and they are at the very top of my "treasure" list, mostly because I put a lot of work into customizing and improving them. They are Rite Edge stilettos, and they're a lot different now then when I first bought them (pictured below).

If my house burned down and all of my knives were lost, losing those $7 stilettos would hurt me far more than losing my most expensive knives.

What is that fixed-blade second from the left? It looks very interesting to me.

Guess my Puma Skinner is my favorite knife. Bought back around 67-68 for $25 but being a vintage carbon job worth several times that now. Thats about the only high end one I got now. Sog Trident and my Alpha folder gets carried most now. Other than that I got some catchin up to do with you guys. Takes time to accumulate but fun doin so.
