On Sunday, we headed to Peche Island for a late Father's Day excursion (boat wasn't ready last week).

Using the walking stick to push off from the dock, and away we go! :)

Didn't sink though, and close to the island now:

My dad checks out the Khukuri; first time he had seen it:

The established fire pit was in use, but close by was charred ground that has seen use over the years.
Time to make a new pit.
Collecting river rocks (and an old brick from back when this was Hiram Walker's homestead):

Time for the trowel, and then creating a ring of rocks:

Dad poses with the Khukuri, then gets a side-by-side spine shot with the Bowie Knife he brought:

More fire, and my brother splitting wood for continued fire fun:

I used the mini Khukuri I brought with me to make a sausage skewer. You can see where I turned the Cho into a choil; the handle was way too short for me to use otherwise...

A kid who had graduated grade 8 was there with his older brother.
They asked how we had managed to get our fire going so quickly; we gave them some fire-making tips, and my brother let them use his saw.

On the way over as they kayaked, the younger brother caught this super cute baby snapping turtle:

We let him know that it would be best if he lowed the water level in the pail, and added a flat-topped river rock to give the little guy a place to rest rather than swimming to exhaustion.

We also gave the turtle his choice between three knives:

Apparently, turtles prefer Khukuris. :D

The kid asked if I wanted a marshmallow to roast...well, in a survival situation, you sure don't turn down food, right? ;)

As you can tell, this is a popular spot:

The brothers asked if we could watch their stuff as they went fishing. The younger brother asked if we wanted any fish if they caught them...I said sure, sounds good. :)
They came back with 5 fish, and gave them all to us; that little kid is a fishing machine!

They were all alive still, so I had to whack them with a handy rock:

The Khukuri sort of worked, but was a bit dull from the day's chopping fun, so I switched to the AG Russell Woodwalker:

I triple bagged them, then stuck them in the cooler with some frozen water bottles.

Enjoying a bit more fire:

We left the fire going on low for the brothers, as it worked great for roasting marshmallows without burning them:

Defying the weather with a mini Khukuri (the Khukuri scared the rain away :D ):

At home, I washed the fish in vinegar, rinsed them, then cooked them in lemon juice with a salt and pepper rub.
Here they are just prior to going in the oven:

They tasted great, but sure had a lot of bones.

Sounds like a fun day. Is that the AG Russell Woodswalker I see on the board with the fish?

Woodswalker. :)

It finally came in handy; I always have it in the pack, but have never had much call to use it. This time, it was a great choice.
Just managed to get rid of the fish smell from it today...took some effort.

Nice! Thanks for taking us all on the trip. I much enjoyed the pics and commentary.

I liked your special opps tactical nitrile gloves. :D
That is a big weinie stick you have parked over the fire.
Looks like you had a fun day with the family.

I always enjoy your picture stories.

Making them is fun as well. :)

EXCELLENT Stabs! As usual!

Thanks.

It was a momentous day when I discovered they made nitrile gloves in a colour other than blue. ;)

The longer stick helps keep me further from the heat and smoke, which can be handy at times.
It also makes for a great fire poking stick afterwards.
I left it with the brothers, as they were staying for a few more hours when we were leaving.

It was a great day of family fun.
Knives: helping families bond since before the word "knife" existed. :D
