I'm new to BladeForum & to collecting/using knives.

Is it just me or does BladeForum have too may rules (too strict)?

I recently had to delete a post regarding deals I saw about some discounted knives on a website. Isn't BladeForum supposed to be as informative as it can be? To help the community regardless of membership status? I've paid my membership fee. I chose to pay it. I dont care if a registered user is seeking info? Answer it, Aren't we here to help?

Isn't it supposed to help all in this community?

I have read so many post & it's awesome to see a community of like minded individuals come together to speak their minds. But this forum is so policed. You can't post this, you cant say this. Aren't we individual's who want to know truths?

This is a great way to or course seek information but does it need to be so RUDE!?!?!?! Would you want you mother treated that way? You wife, husband, son, daughter. etc.?????

I don't deny the fact of members who have been here for a long time & with that experience comes some type of wisdom, but come on, there are new people everyday that seek information on this community. Is this just me or have others felt this?

Pleas leave you comments.

The issue with the site/deal you posted is in regards to many other sites have paid memberships here to promote their own business. As supporting members of this site, by advertising a site that hasn't paid to help support this site, you potentially take business away from them.

As per rudeness and such, you'll encounter that everywhere in life, some places more then others, but the interwebz takes the cake when it allows people to say what they want with a keyboard all while hiding behind a cpu screen without any real repercussions. While most are still respectful, you'll always have that handful who feel their oats when talking in online forums, it Just comes with the territory. My best advice is just get thicker skin and deal with it.

Well, the problem is being able to decide when a post crosses the line from "informative" to "spam".

And you will always have people who are aggressively promoting their own company or products.

It's gotten even worse with the creation of spam-bots, which can carpet-bomb a forum with ads for whatever product they have been programmed to shill.

Bladeforums is a big place, with diverse personalities, and there is not always a perfectly fair answer. So in the interest of being as fair as possible, the mods require everybody to abide by the same rule. No linking to sales sites unless they are paid Bladeforums members.

I'm sure your intentions were benign, but the mods' job is to apply the rules as equally as possible to everybody.

Here's some truth:

Every forum has rules.

Forums are not democracies.

Your speech in a forum is limited, just like your speech is limited in someone else's home.

If that isn't agreeable, then you can always click on the red x at the top right of your screen.

First of all, welcome, glad to have you hear.

Understand, you're brand new here and you're immediately complaining about how things are run. It sounds like you didn't bother to read the rules before posting and you're complaining about the mod staff, who are generally pretty well liked. I can kind of tell you this isn't going to go over very well.

As for us all being here to help, no, not really. Most of us are here to discuss our passion for sharp bits of steel. Some are here to sell and trade knives, others are here to learn how to make knives, some are here to argue and debate, some for a combination of those things. You can get a LOT of help here, often fairly easily, but if you assume you're entitled to it there are a lot of members who are going to jump on you.

Go read the rules, read more and post less for awhile, get a feel for the community you just jumped into. Maybe you'll love it here, maybe you'll decide we're all jerks and leave.

Well, as I said in the e-mail I sent (the thread was closed at the time), BladeForums has more rules than some forums but it is also a very good forum.

If you go hang in Traditional for a bit things will be much more civil but there will be more rules.

Whatya gonna do? It's worth it.

Threads usually start well in General but often derail. You can just stop checking them or watch the train wreck.

(edited to add)

Oh, I see what happened. You started a new thread. Tsk, tsk.

We've all had the butthurt before. It'll be awright. Welcome to the forum.

JakeInSF, please go to Settings (upper right)
then to Permission Groups (left side)
then select your correct membership level.

I moved this to Tech Support, which is for discussing website procedures. General Knife Discussion is for discussing specific knives themselves. It isn't an all-purpose bulletin board.

Bladeforums is big enough to cost a lot of money to run. Paid subscriptions allow us to keep open. Respecting the rights of those who pay encoursges them to continue to do so.

Spend a bit more time and you'll understand that the rules help to keep this place a positive one. As far as I can tell, the rules evolved over time with the website. I'm sure most rules were reactionary.

I suppose sometimes the rules might squash a thread or discussion that is leaning heavily towards the side of acceptable. But that's a sacrifice that's made in order to keep the site friendly. There are some real idiots out there who want nothing more than to start fights online. This makes it hard to bend the rules.

I'd like to add, addressing posting found deals, that the rule regarding posting things showing dealers who are not sponsors are there to protect the forums sponsors.

Yes it is nice to share deals with members, but it's also nice to have sponsors to keep the place alive. To keep the sponsor around, giving spark the money to keep this place going, their rights to sell must be protected also.

Considering the size and number of members of this board, it is a very good board compared to most. Many places fold up because of the effects of things that the rules here prevent. Is it a pain sometimes? Yes, but generally it's worth it to keep this forum alive and well and keep the cancer out.

Welcome to BF.

awful lot of criticism for such a short time of being on the site. Maybe just some relaxed reading over a couple of months before wanting changes to suit you? Just saying..........

^^^ Well put. That's the impression I've gotten in the short time I've been here; the rules seem to have been designed piecemeal in response to situations that the moderators couldn't ignore... trolls trying to make others miserable, scam artists out to exploit members on the exchange, businesses looking to get advertising without paying for it -- and much of the money that allows Bladeforums to operate comes from the paying dealers and knifemakers. Otherwise, the mods seem to take a laissez faire approach, mostly concerned with organization, trying to keep the forums from getting too chaotic. It's a largely thankless task, but one they do well.

When I found BF, I tried to get a feel for things first, reading old threads, learning the customs and taboos. It helped, but I still say stupid s**t. Poorly-considered posts are far from rare, and rarely fatal. As long as you're basically well-intentioned and respectful, speak your mind.

So you are complaining about the rules you haven't even bothered to read. Great. This should go well.

Welcome to BFC!

You will learn, eventually, that not only is this the best Knife enthusiast forum - but one of the best bunch of people connected by one common interest you might find on the computy.

It is OK to question the rules, once. Then you might sit back and read, and read, and read. And you know what??? You know more about knives than you thought your brain could ever know about any one thing.

Now, join us!

Eric

I like to rappel. There are a lot of rules. It's still fun. Rules and fun are not mutually exclusive.

I actually find a lack of rules can seriously detract from the fun. This holds particularly true of things like rappelling.
