Isn't BladeForum Supposed to be fun?!?!?!

Some read warranties, contrats, fine print and operation manuals. Others do not.

So you are complaining about the rules you haven't even bothered to read. Great. This should go well.

Welcome to BFC!

 Lol... probably not the best way to start, no.

I'm surprised how many people join BF and immediately start suggesting the way things should be -- to better suit them, basically -- without even reading the rules. But perhaps even more important is learning the customs and not-so-obvious relationships that unofficially govern each sub-forum. Until they've seen how things go wrong for other newbs, it'll likely go wrong for them as well.

It's a cliché around here, but it's also sound advice: read more, post less. Starting off with short posts in other people's threads is a good way to go. If you've got anything under 50, maybe 100 posts, starting threads in GKD, or W&C (for the love of Quetzalcoatl, do NOT start a thread in W&C, unless psychological vivisection sounds like fun :D), then acting like the thread is their own little birthday party, each response a gift-wrapped present just for them -- that's a very bad way to start... (I'm thinking of one annoying newb in particular, not Bore-us-74X... this time ;))

I am a fairly new member here myself but I had found this site by googling different knife subjects and had hung around for over a year prior to joining. During that time I got a feel for what was acceptable and what was not. As far as deals we all like them but truth is most knife people have 1 or 2 knife stores they do business with and always go to them first when seeking a new purchase even if you can get it for a few dollars less because they know and trust their "go to" companies. As far as "rude" applies to this forum the only thing rude I have found are the trolls that post here and I simply don't read anything they post once I discover them. Mods here are great IMO they are simply trying enforce the rules without discrimination. No different from a police officer issuing a ticket to someone exceeding the speed limit. This is a great place with a wealth of knowledge to anyone interested in knives. One last thing before you start a new thread make sure there is not one already addressing what you want to say. I usually google the subject and add blade forums to it. I.e." spyderco reviews blade forums ". Welcome to Blade Forums nd enjoy this great site.

I'm new to BladeForum & to collecting/using knives.

Is it just me or does BladeForum have too may rules (too strict)?

I recently had to delete a post regarding deals I saw about some discounted knives on a website. Isn't BladeForum supposed to be as informative as it can be? To help the community regardless of membership status? I've paid my membership fee. I chose to pay it. I dont care if a registered user is seeking info? Answer it, Aren't we here to help?

Isn't it supposed to help all in this community?

I have read so many post & it's awesome to see a community of like minded individuals come together to speak their minds. But this forum is so policed. You can't post this, you cant say this. Aren't we individual's who want to know truths?

This is a great way to or course seek information but does it need to be so RUDE!?!?!?! Would you want you mother treated that way? You wife, husband, son, daughter. etc.?????

I don't deny the fact of members who have been here for a long time & with that experience comes some type of wisdom, but come on, there are new people everyday that seek information on this community. Is this just me or have others felt this?

Pleas leave you comments.

If you really want to know the truth, post this question up in Whine and Cheese. ;)

Rules are there for a reason, and most of the reasons actually makes sense. The rule I don't understand, (perhaps there is a perfectly good reason but I can't think what it might be) is why I used to be able to post pics, but without a paid membership I no longer can. I enjoy seeing the other knives out there and assume that some of mine might be appreciated by others too, but alas it's just not to be I guess.

spyderg, you can post pics, and we'd love to see them. Wihout a paid membership, you just have to use a photo hosting site.

Paid members can upload pictures from their computers, but anyone can open a photo hosting account.

1. I use www.photobucket.com .

Download your pictures.
Go to your Photobucket album.
Click on the picture you want.
Go to the right and see Links to share this photo
Left click on IMG. It will flash Copied. Paste into your post.

2. Another way: go to http://www.imgur.com and upload your image.
After uploading, select the BBCode option - it starts with .
Copy & Paste to your thread.

Good to know, thanks. I might go that route, one more account to set up and password to remember I guess.

When I first started participating on this forum I also felt like there were too many rules. I also felt like there were a lot of rude jerks on the forum.

Over time (and not a lot of time, I'm still pretty new) I started to understand the whys of a lot of the rules. Sometimes the rules still bug me (I hang out in the traditionals sub forum a lot, and there are more rules there), but the rules make everything go smoother and cut down on the clutter. I think you'll find that the rules aren't so ridiculous after you've been participating for a while.

That said, I still think there are a lot of rude jerks. I tend to stay away from the areas where the ones that bug me congregate. But sometimes there are individuals, like one I shall not name, that write with a tone that just infuriates me but are actually very knowledgeable. Some of the jerks are jerks because they have been answering the same questions for years and are tired of seeing people say the same stupid things. The forum is worth the occasional rudeness, and the rules tend to limit out and out trolling. So with a little time the hide thickens.

^---- What ever you do, DON'T do this unless you're ready for some serious abuse!

What others have said is very true. I read posts on BF for about a year before I joined the site. Yes there are a lot of rules, but they all exist for a good reason. As you spend more time here I think you'll see that and appreciate how it really does keep the "Signal to noise ratio" down.

He's a useful tip for you. If you think someone is particularly rude, go to your "Settings" scroll down to "Account" and add their username to your "Edit Ignore List". Then you won't see or have to scroll through any their posts anymore.

Warning, there's a couple of expletives.

Just a friendly reminder.

Welcome to BFC. I think if you give this place a chance you will end up enjoying it quite a bit.

I more than understand your point of view, but step back and consider what is going on here.

Yes there are great deals that pop up quite often, but is it fair to the dealers who support this site to allow what ammounts to fee advertising to those who do not. Without those dealers and members as well as the generosity of the forum owner especially during the first 1/2 decade, BFC would not exist.

Some of our rules here do limit disucssion and information on great deals at times, but when you consider how this site is funded, those occasional limits are not that important in the grand scheme of things.
The other week I went to a non knife shop in my neighborhood. They specialize in finding stuff at great prices and sending out a weekly flyer on them.

They were selling SAK Alox Farmers in blister packs at $12.00. I would have loved to have posted the info here for friends or anyone else that lives in Bastidville, the best I could do was let a few people know with a phone call that I felt would be interested. So I understand your initial thought.

You are now dead to me. :D

Ruh oh. :D OK I better stop by there on the way home from the dog shops today. If they have any they are yours. ;)

It's me, isn't it? :p
Nah, I'm not knowledgeable enough to make up for rudeness. :D
