We had some company here for a couple of days . The girls went to town shopping and the boys went to the shop . The 13 yr. old wanted to see how a knife is made , so he picked out a heat treated blank and away we went . This is the results . This boy is nothing but grins right now . The girls going home with thrift store cloths and the boy with a handmade custom knife . Everyone is happy .

That was really cool of you jack. You might have a future knifemaker on your hands.

he would not put that knife down all night . We had to take it away so he would go to bed . I think he is happy .

Jack,

That's cool!

Don't think it's the way it always is though. Over the years there have been several of my boys friends that expressed a great interest in how a knife is made so it's off to the shop we went.

My approach has always been to get them involved (as much as possible and safe) in making their own knife. Most got very involved and made a pretty darn good knife and came away with a sense of pride that only comes from accomplishing something for yourself.

But a few lost complete interest when they found that I simply was not going to make a knife for them with out any effort on their part. One of these little bast@rds showed up a few weeks ago wanting the knife I had started with him him several years ago and was quite put out that I had not finished it and saved it for him!

It is really cool, though, when the light truns on in a kids eyes when he holds something in his hands that he (mostly) made and previously thought he could not.

Good on ya, Jack!!
