So I've been reading and wishing and looking and watching. I think I have finally decided on what the perfect khuk for me would be. The problem is I can't seem to find one that has not been sold already. So I figured I would post up here to see what the chances of finding one would be.

So I want the following the best I can tell ~>

Horn Handle
16-18"
32 ounce or less
Chiruwa
White metal bolster and end cap
Lanyard hole
Village finish
None or very simple design on the spine.
Shallow like shown below cut out (Forget the name now)

Something along these lines I think is what I would like to get ~>

But with the white metal and lanyard hole of something like this ~>

Sorry about that.

Well, I know I'm new here. I've always loved the look of Khuks... just hope to finally get one.

Welcome Devilman!

The Khukuri you picture is a Chiruwa Ang Khola that i did a little work on. It is 16.5 inches OAL.
To me it is just about the perfect khukuri for hiking and camping.

Lanyards are not recommended for Khukuri. If you should lose your grip while chopping, the last thing you want is a sharp heavy piece of steel swinging at you from the end of your arm. It will likely cut you very badly before you can regain control.

Lastly, i had to edit the "want to buy" portion of your post. All questions regarding sales by individuals belong in the Exchange.

Why do you want a horn handle?

I just want the horn instead of the wood for hmmm.. I won't say durability. I guess color and finish and hmmm.. not sure exactly. Just like the BLACK of it instead of the colors of wood.

Ok I like the looks of the horn handle myself but for me I think that wood would offer a better grip and not be as slippery as horn when chopping and horn could get hot or cold in the weather more than wood.

Thank you Karda.... Yes I pulled the pics from one of your old sales threads. I apologize for the WTB part, just trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to get what I THINK I want.

I know what you mean about the lanyard hole. I never loop the rope when I have one, but like that it's there. I wouldn't have a rope in it I'm sure just like that I could run something through there makes me feel better. Don't exactly know why.

I'm also open to picking up a used one and maybe even one without a sheath as I have a plan to get a leather sheath made for it anyway. I know the wood and buffalo ones work, but I prefer the full leather ones. Easier for me to maintain and repair.

I keep watching for the "perfect" one to pop up now that I'm shopping for one, but I got tired of waiting and watching and decided to post up. :D

Thanks Karda and HI does make some very nice blades!

And the full tang I want because I can make scales if the horn were to come off. I can't make the slip fit peened tang as easily. Just a more simple style as well. I know that the chiruwa style is going to throw the balance to the back some as it makes the handle heavier. I'm not dead set on wait but I know for sure under 2lbs would be my goal.

Have you tried emailing auntie with your request? The kamis have been known to do custom work before.

It's certainly interesting to think about what a khuk would be like with all the various favorite features added on. Right now I'm thinking a dui chirra ultimate fighter would be pretty sweet...

The fastest way for you to get exactly what you want is to inquire with Auntie Yangdu at himimp@aol.com.
Next is to watch the DOTD sales here in the forum.
H.I's are usually pretty sparse in the Exchange for the most part.

No, Thank You for choosing Himalayan Imports!

Yes sparse in the exchange is why I chose to post up here. And yes I've contacted Yangdu about one that is for sale currently, but it's not my "unicorn" per say. And I don't know that I can afford my "unicorn" to be built right now either. :D

Thanx for the feedback and replies folks.

You never know what your unicorn will be priced to built unless you try it. Besides, I think it's worth you customizing it with auntie since the chance of someone having your unicorn is pretty slim and it's better to have a blade that you had some control in designing and calling your own for many years to come.

You wont regret it, I know I didn't. Besides, you only live once and money never last anyways.

OldeWolf, I know money never lasts. But I have to have it first before I can worry about it lasting. :D I have worked up a bit of a list of mods I guess. I'll send them them Yangdu and see what she says.

Gomipile, thank you for the pic and info on that. The lanyard hole for me is just something I like. It could be something that you put a longer leash on like you say about working over water and such. A leash of sorts and not just an over the wrist lanyard.

DM

Karda, does your opinion on lanyards include the "loop over thumb" style of lanyard use which is specifically intended to both make the knife swing away from the body, and be easy to drop quickly if necessary? If I had an ASTK and was, say, using it over open water or a river, I might want to loop up this way.

I dislike lanyards of any type. Even the "loop over thumb" type. If the lanyard should catch on your thumb it will still swing back towards you.
If you must use a lanyard for any reason, do so with extreme care.

Sounds like you'd want a CAK with white furniture and a lanyard loop like the ASTK. Just order from Yangdu when ready.

DevilMan:

Stickfred has it right. A villager CAK with white metal trim and chiruwa-style horn handle is not uncommon in the weight and length specs that you want. Yangdu might not have it now, but one will come along if you have patience and ask her to put you on the list for the next one.

The only customization needed would be a lanyard hole. I imagine the kamis could do that with no trouble. If you have access to a drill press you could probably make your own lanyard hole, and for a few cents more give it a nice brass lining (like the ASTK model in your second photo). I'd go very, very slow with any drilling, so you don't overheat the metal or melt the laha epoxy. And don't forget the danger of looping it to your wrist.

From your earlier posting it sounds like this will be your first Khukuri, or your first from HI. I wouldn't worry too much about the exact specs. When you have one of these impressive beauties in your hand, some of the details that seem important in pictures are likely to fade away. There's a visceral appeal about a well-made khukuri. It's one of the reasons that people end up with more than one and with diverse models.

Think about an art object. You wouldn't say, "I want the perfect painting or the perfect sculpture, and I only want one." Or tools: You wouldn't say, "I want the perfect hammer or the perfect screwdriver, and that one will serve all my needs." Of course money is an issue, and your first khukuri is important, but really, I wouldn't sweat the fine details. My first acquisition was an Ultimate Fighter (18" long and 31 oz). I still really like it, but I also like my 15" 16 oz Chitlangi, and my 18" 37 oz ASTK. These are like night and day in size, weight, look and feel, but every one is great in its own way.
