Issues with new Emissary black version

This is sad now that I read this. I get my 470-1 in the mail today. I will test it and give you a heads up. If this is true then I wil be a bit upset with play. But It is still a good knife to have. This will be my 3rd Benchmade.

Yeah I would be interested to know. I've owned a ton of Benchmade's, the only issue I have ever had is a poor factory grind, or shipping not sharp. Never seen bladeplay in a Benchmade ever, not even one time.

On the other hand, don't be bummed when it shows up. No matter what, it's still a Benchmade!

All of our AXIS Assist, and our automatics as well, will have a small amount of play up and down and even some side to side to allow for movement of the bushing system. You can tighten them down to remove more of the play but it will slow down the action of the blade. Without some freedom for the blade they are sluggish. Our assembly team make sure that each knife is adjusted as tight as possible to remove play but the priority is the action. This play will not effect cutting performance in anyway. If the blade is flopping up and down then that would be a problem that we can take care of. But if you are forcing the blade up and down against the spring to cause some play that would be considered normal.

Well as it were, I just got off the phone with a support engineer from Benchmade who just told me the same thing. Thanks so much for the info.

I have said this before, but I feel compelled to say it again. You guys seriously have THE BEST customer service in the world. And when I say THE BEST, I mean it. You guys make Springfield, Leupold, and Wilson Combat (three extremely reputable companies for treating their customers properly) look second rate.

My first 'nice' pocket knife was a Benchmade. My second 'nice' pocket knife was also a Benchmade, but it had issues that couldn't be resolved. Needless to say you guys took care of me without batting an eyelash. That's why I've purchased so many Benchmade knives since! I've run the gambit with other brands, buying everything from Chris Reeve's to Striders, to custom folders. I even love Spyderco.

When it comes down to it though, Benchmade is still IMHO the best, and my favorite knife company. Period. There is just something about the designs and the people that stand behind them.

So thanks again for the info. It's so great to have you guys participating here on the forum! I feel spoiled!

Just got it in and did my blade testing.... First off very nice job with the blade Benchmade. This thing is razor sharp. I did notice the play more side to side. I only have Benchmade knifes and none of them do that. I do have a little up and down play. But after Benchmade replied back I can understand why it would be. It is not enough for me to notice.

I also got a "first production 536 of 1000". Kinda like that but I feel that I should not use the blade just for that fact alone. Do people use "first productions"?

The real value that holds and increases over time are in concept and prototype versions. First production marked knives are most often the same as the following un-marked regular models and aren't worth any more in the marketplace. So long as the model is in the catalog and still available, spare blades and parts will be available, maybe not numbered though. Personally, I always (try) to wait until the non-numbered models are in the flow, so any problems or minor adjustments made will be thought out...and even then the full warranty covers every one, whether they're marked or not. :) So - I would not hesitate to use your knife.

Thanks for asking that DG, and you JK for answering. It's a question that has been on my mind quite a bit as I am new to BKC. I almost don't even want LE's or gold class because I could never bring myself to using them.

Yes, I myself was hoping to not be a first production run guinea pig, but alas. Honestly Benchmade has treated me so well in the past, I don't mind sending it in if it helps them dial in the design.

The REAL question I want answered is, where do you folks find all your fancy prototypes anyway? :P

how do you know if you will get a first production run, other than buying it from a retail store.

I did not know. I just ordered it. Must of the sites on the net are sold out of the 470-1. I kinda had an idea that I would have got one. I just feel like I should not use it. Now that you say there is no value to the first runs I will use it.

I have always been under the impression to expect a little bladeplay with Assisted Opening/Automatic knives. I tend to prefer manual openers (and so does my state, go figure).

I've handled an Emissary before that my friend carries. Too small for my hand but it seems like a good blade as often as he mentions it.

I have an Auto 2550 and ZERO blade play. Solid

I got my dad a first production 470-1 for Christmas and it is perfect in every way. Super solid lock up and wicked assist. I was actually a little upset that I got him a much nicer knife than my Torrent 890 haha

Nope. They were having consistency issues with grey from the subcontractor, so they switched colors.

The only thing I do not like about the black so far is that it seems to scratch easy. I have only had it for 4 days and it already has scratches on the handle. I have not even carried it more than one day. This is the only thing I do not like about this knife so far.

I have a Benchmade 707, and my brother just bought a mini presidio, both of our knives have side to side blade play, no matter how much you tighten the pivot screw. My 707 is not to bad but my brothers presidio has a lot of blade play. He is going to send it back. I also recently bought another 707, and it had a lot of issues. The knife had nicks and a pretty bad burr on the blade, and the axis lock was adjusted horribly, it was very loose, and sat crooked when locked, also the g-10 inlay did not sit flush on one side, not even close, it was raised above the scale quite a bit. I returned the 707, and we will see what Benchmade does with the Presidio. I hate to say it because I like Benchmade knives, but the quality control is not that great. I have read many posts about problems related to mine, It seems to be some what common, which is not good. i will say most threads I read were people send the knife back, the problems are fixed, but who wants to buy a knife thinking there is a good chance it will need service. I am just speaking the truth about problems I have seen first hand, i know some people might not like hearing this stuff, but I always like to share real experiences about products. I have pictures of the 707 I might put up some time soon. I have only purchased two Benchmades, and my brother purchased one, all had issues, just being real.

I have two smallish BM's, a 480-1 (m390 & CF) Shoki and a 482 (S30V & CF/cocobolo) Megumi, the first with nearly the same size/style/metal as the 470/470-1. Mine are non-ASSIST models, perhaps why they are perfect. I submit them as similarly priced & sized substitutes, should your satisfaction with the 470-1 be tested too far.

I have many BM models - happy with all, even though the AUTO models are my least favorite - followed by the ASSIST models - simply because I cannot carry them here. All but two BM's were bought locally, too. I found myself taking the rollerASSIST-function bar that bridged between the torsion springs in my 790 Subrosa out, making it a true manual knife - and a, finally, frequent 'carry' choice. Here, top down, are: Benchmade Forum Knife 2012 950-1201; 482 Megumi; & 480-1 Shoki.
