It all started because I needed a hunting knife.... A stealth HOG's story

I don't often post in this forum, but I've been a regular “lurker” for over seven years. I've also interacted with many who do post here, for years as a buyer on the exchange and more recently as a seller (for the most part). I've really enjoyed this forum and all of the positive transactions I've had with those that hang out here so I thought I'd share some photos that might be awe inspiring, shocking, or a bit scary depending on your “addiction” status....

As noted in the title my interest in knives started with a legitimate need for a hunting knife. As I'm inclined to do, this lead to research. Before long I was disoriented and in the middle of an all consuming Swamp. Then the Hogs came out of the shadows, and as is said, the rest is history....

I didn't set out to be a “collector”. In fact I didn't realize I was a collector until I was well down the slippery slope.... It's often said here that without a picture it didn't happen. Well it did happen and here's what it looked like within a knife or two of the peak (photo 1 - the fixed blades, photo 2 - the folders):

I've gotten a lot of pleasure out of acquiring and owning these knives. I fondly recall the “Game Warden” era. I spent many evenings glued to my computer compulsively hitting the F5 key waiting for the latest iteration to drop, and then “competing” to grab what I could as they bounced in and out of carts, flashing their availability ever so briefly before finally being scooped up for good. Crazy to those who haven't been bitten by the bug, but intriguing to me, and the many others who were doing exactly the same thing.

The world of Busse, whether it be use, collecting, or just hanging out is interesting. As we all know the knives are great and the shop is a pleasure to deal with, but it's more then that. It's how Jerry markets his product. He's created a culture that's engaging and mutually rewarding. He's grown his business, while simultaneously facilitating a secondary market that allows his customers to buy with minimal financial risk, a true rarity. I have a lot of respect for what Jerry has, and continues to accomplish and am glad to have been a participant. I've wanted to say that for years, but I don't post often....

I realized I needed to “down size” a few years ago. It took awhile to turn my thoughts into action, but I started selling some of the knives I'd purchased early last year. Fast forward eighteen months and I still have a (very) few knives left to sell, but I'm more or less down to my core dozen.... Well two dozen actually, but who's counting! Here's what made the cut (pun intended): The first picture is of my users, or certain to be users. I imagine there will be changes over time (like the addition of a B8 when it's released in two weeks), but each of these knives has a purpose and a place. My remaining “collection” knives are in the second photograph. Each one represents something special to me. Some were very hard to come by, one is my first Busse, and a couple are one of a kind. I'm struggling with the 'why' aspect of collecting, but for now these are keepers....

Thanks for sharing those pictures. I showed them with my wife, and now my collection doesn't look nearly as ridiculous-in fact, I might now be able to convince her that I really do need a few more :D. Seriously though, that is an impressive collection you have.

You are a sick, sick man tooth & nail.

I arrived here about a year after you did... seeking the same thing. A hunting knife that wouldn't lose it's edge after processing a deer. It is poor form in deer camp to stop processing to sharpen your knife. Anyway, I got into the tail end of the Game Warden thing. What a kick! Those were great days... remember 'skunk-junk'... lol.

Then something strange happened between f5'ing. Some FFBM's and Batac's showed up!!! Oh man... how could I resist. Since then I've been very popular with Chase bank credit card division. No regrets... right?! The rest is history. I need a bigger safe. But still, I do not consider myself a 'collector' only a guy in search of the ultimate quality knife at a reasonable price (in every blade length with some duplicates..just in case). :D

Thanks for posting... good stuff!

HOLY CRAP is right! I thought I was bad, that is IMPRESSIVE! Amazing collection.

I didn't see a LBTG, dude you are missing out.

You may be right, and I've thought long and hard about getting one, but I'm not sold on the idea. I think we (you, Daryl and I) need a Basic 8. We should give it two weeks....

the first fixed blade collection pic is Good God Almighty! Wowzers some great blades there. Your after pic is much more reasonable and shouldn't be a problem.

Regarding the GW's...
I did not see one with the Desert Storm G10...
Then again I saw more than I ever have before, so who's gonna miss just one warden?

That top pic should be considered the 8th wonder of the modern world.

No regrets for sure, and I'm 100% on board with your thought process.... "ultimate quality.... at a reasonable price". Knives and redundancy.... It works for me!

Tooth & Nail, Thanks for sharing your journey in this crazy world. I hope that you join in to the conversations more often. By the way HOLY CRAP you have had some killer blades.
