It followed me home

Wow Justin nice score  That oughtta keep you busy for a long time,or forever whichever comes first;)

I spent too much, now I need to make some knives and sell them to help recoup the cost >_< I did spend the day after getting all that stuff re-organizing the shop however, and moving things around

almost all the bar stock in that mess of stuff is wrought iron, one or two bars of mild steel thrown in, and the metal bucket is full of a bunch of tool steel, lots of jackhammer bit blanks, O1 rods of various diameters and between a foot and 18 inches, etc.

One of the swage blocks is an original Yater block, hardly ever used, the other is a Green River No1 industrial, made in Mass around 1890s. The cone is an 1885 Wiley & Russel slotted cone mandrel, the top of which is removeable.

man i wish i could get a few of those items from you. HEHEHEHEHE!!!! what i wouldnt give to find a deal like that. nice find. you mind if i ask you how much you paid for all of it?

Too much, 2500, took a loan from my brother (Swage blocks are very expensive, as are cone mandrels, particluarly slotted ones, and particularly ones without cracks and flaws, that mandrel was 1/3 of what I spent right there)

That being said, 2500 is still a pretty damn good price for all of what I got. That set of repouse hammers is like 400$ value in hammers right there alone.

I dont actulaly have 230V to my garage either, so i'm going ot have to run a makeshift extension cable out from where my washer and dryer are next to the door of my walkout basement for that lincoln buzz box. That and I need to learn to weld, get sticks for it, get a face shield, etc >_<

It never occurred to me that one man could own or even want that many hammers, till I started hanging around in here!

I never could understand our american ways of having Both 220 and 110 volts in the same house, why not simply have 240V and be done with it. so much simpler here.

Good score Justin

Looks like a case of GAS  (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) to me :jerkit:

Nice score Justin! That cone mandrel is in great shape, and the swedges....man...I need some swedge blocks...

Of course, looking around the shop I think I'm going to have to start calling you the 2x4 king! :D

You're gonna LOVE that Lincoln! It's a real workhorse! I've got one that was bought new in '84 and is as good today as it was then.

I've gota learn to weld first. That lincoln buzz box is from around 80 to 84 itself. Need to get myself a mask, some sticks to burn through, etc

Maybe now thta i have a welder i dont know how to use, i can start working on buildling a junk yard power hammer, along the lines of Rusty or Dusty.

As for the 2x4s... well... i cant find any tree cutting companies around here that dont chip up their logs and that would let me pick up some stumps... so it was more convenient to make my own stumps.

Well, I just got back from the hardware store, bought myself 5lbs of E-6011 stick (which i was told was the best to learn with), a welding helmet, and a book on welding.

After reading this book i'll probably be ready to go make a mess out of a few pieces of steel.

Cone mandrels are ... for making circles ! slotted ones are superior to non slotted ones, because you hold the metal with tongs, and you fit the tongs into the slot, so that you can make a true circle instead of an oval and have to true it up after because of where you were holding the metal.

Swage blocks are for shaping metal, hammer into the depressions for certain radius rounds, half rounds, angles, to bend in certain ways, to shape bowls, spoons, etc.

Belive me it cost me a pretty penny for all that, so "lucky" has to go with "in debt" for the forseeable future.

Justin, this coming Saturday, I was planning to do up the forge for the door prize for your HI. We could do your's up at the same-time. You would need to pickup a 2" nipple of black pipe.;)

This comming up saturday? consider it a date. I'm going to be busy the saturday after that celebratin' my older brother's birthday, so next weekend is perfect. I've got a 6" x 2"round black pipe nipple in the garage in a pile of misc metal things, so that's covered too.

If I burn enough sticks practicing making beads and what not this next week (assuming i have time), I'll weld feet onto my body before next weekend too.
