Last night, in the chat thread, I posted up a request for donations for my Scout Troop so that we could have an awesome new stainless steel custom firepit thingy made for the Troop to use for the next bajillion years. The price for the steel was right at $500, and I will be honest, I expected a long arduous time of raising the funds.

I was wrong.

The generosity in this place is amazing. Last night and today saw several donations made, and then this afternoon one incredibly generous person (who asked to remain anonymous) donated an incredibly large amount. So much so that we are done. I am blown away. I sat here for about 20 minutes speechless.

To everyone that donated, to all my brothers and sisters here in the forum, and to that one anonymous donator especially, thank all of you, from the bottom of my heart. Scouting is one of the things most important in my life because I feel it is one of few avenues left to teach young boys how to be men in this watered down society that places more emphasis on political correctness than learning to do what is needed. To all of you, again, thank you. Be expecting some definite status updates and pics. The shop that will be doing the work is currently a touch busy helping to build some parts for a very large bridge here in WV, and I will be honest, I thought I had a month or two to as far as getting it done, so it will be a bit before they can start work on it, but you will definitely get to see the finished product, and the deepest, most sincere thanks from myself and everyone involved in our Troop.

With more thanks than I can ever properly express from myself and Troop 3, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Damn that's awesome! Except I didn't get a chance to chip in ..lol the dirty selfish rat.
Love the scouts its a great cause, and whoever it was that dropped the bundle on it, well done.

That is awesome. Some great folks around here for sure!
Great work for a great cause.

AWESOME SAUCE!!!!

Moose (poor broke bastid that didn't chip in anything but sarcasm)

This place continues to amaze me. I've never seen so much give in an online community. Hell, I haven't even been in a real life community with so much give. Kinda makes me wanna join in on the giving goodness when I get the chance!

Yeah. Just blows the mind.

D, it's a damn good cause. Good on you for taking up the challenge to raise the funds, even if it didn't end up so challenging. Imaginary free Beckers for all that helped!

That is so awesome! This place is awesome.

Post pics when you get the fire pit all set up.

Jeremy

I definitely will, but like I said, the place making it is full up for the next little while cause they are helping to rebuild part of the New River Gorge Bridge. It is the third largest single span single arch bridge in the world, so it will take 'em a bit. But you can expect pics, updates, prolly even greeting cards outta the deal. I seriously thought it would take a bit longer than 24 hours to get that kinda money together. Glad I was wrong.

Did I mention I frickin love this place?

That's awesome, I hope it lasts 2 bajillion years! But seriously, that's great man, I wish there were more adult leaders like you down here.

As the Scoutmaster of this Troop; I am sincerely greatful to DerekH and all members of the forums for their support to our Troop. Derek brought me this idea last night at our meeting. I loved the idea of but when he told me the cost I thought we would be into the fall/winter before we could get the money to do this. Man was I wrong about that. To the anonymous donor (BTW DerekH is keeping your anonymous - he wouldn't even tell me) and all the others who not only supported us on this but support Scouting in general a big thank you!!! I grew up in Scouting and it has helped me thru my life. I try to teach my Scouts that when they have to make a tough choice or decision in life use the Scout Law as a guide and you can't go wrong. Scouting's belief's and values seem to be on the decline in today's society and for the life of me I don't know why. It teaches young men to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Clean, Brave and Reverant. Also, it teaches them to realize hard work pays off and grooms them to be productive members of society. Though this firepit may be a small piece of camping equipment; think of it like this: 10-12 boys aged 12-16 sitting around a fire in late November early December. Air is cold and crisp snow on the ground and they are cold. But the fire brings them together in a place to socialize, learn and grow. The older Scouts are telling stories of another cold and snowy campout and what they did. The younger ones listening intently and storing away these lessons. Or maybe they are sitting around telling stories about each other and laughing and having a great time. Perhaps this fire is the light they see off in the distance as they make their way back to camp from a day SPENT OUTSIDE IN THE WOODS!!! After all this is over the evening is getting eve later the boys are in bed and now the adults huddle around a smaller fire and discuss the past days events and what is in store for the next day. Maybe they are sitting around talking about life; what is going on in their lives and that of their families. The best conversations I have ever had in my life have been around a camp fire. Whether it was at a Scout Camp as a youth or adult. A campfire in my back yard with my wife and kids or one on a cold night in the mountains of northern Iraq these have stuck with me my entire life. So know this you didn't just donate to help a Troop have a place to build a fire your donations and support are contributing to the memories of young men who are making up the next generation that will lead us into the future. With all the humility I can muster I offer up a sincere THANK YOU on behalf of all the Scouts of Troop 3.

Imagine what kinda donations you'd have gotten if you'd have done it in the chat thread.

I know it's slightly off topic, but for fundraisers, one thing my brothers Troop does is spirit nights at places like Chick-fi-la (did I get that right?) and CiCi's pizza, they made upwards of $200 every time between tips and the 10% deal they worked out with the managers.

Yeah Chick-Fil-A is a good one. We are doing that on Tuesday evening. That money is for badges, patches, uniform needs, etc. We do a pancake breakfast at Apple Bee's as well. These Help pay for kids who come from low income families that won't get to go to camps any other ways.

I personally like earning all the money to go to summer camp, well, the idea of it anyhow, but that's partially because I have never been to summer camp as a camper, only as staff.

Just when you've come within a fraction of completely giving up on humanity and life in general, something like this happens. Derek speechless. Damn.

Just gave me the warm and fuzzies Derek... Then again I am sitting on the can as I write this...
