  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

It is not often that I am speechless.

Wow! That is awesome! I wish I would have had the chance to donate, but I am sure the fire-pit will get plenty of use.
Awesome...

Excellent. Most excellent indeed. And dang man, that was fast! Congrats Troop 3!!

Very, very cool! I helped my son build his first pinewood derby car this year. He placed in the race. I thought he was going to sleep with the trophy under his pillow. :)

I didn't see the call go out but the generosity of these guys does not surprise me. Some very, very good people here.

Seriously, I tried scouting a couple times, I really appreciated it. At the time I just wasn't into uniforms and being told what to do. Yeah, I know.

Three words for your former self. Just Do It. But if Venturing was around 15 years ago (it's a 10 or so yr old program now), you would have loved that. Choose your leaders, uniform, where you go, everything. At least that's what it was supposed to be. I hate Crew Masters, the primary adult leaders for Crews are Advisors.

that is absolutely amazing. just reading this affirms my belief that spending time in this subforum is a worthwhile experience! good job folks!

I hate that my daughter wont get the same out of girl scouts that she could get in BSA, but I get it. I'm not the kind to fight it either, I'll just teach her a lot of it myself. I hope she has a strong liver... Derek, your scouts are lucky you and the Major are there for them.

How old is your daughter? She can join Venturing at 14 (technically 13 and completed the 8th grade, but I don't think college kids and 13 yr olds mix, boy or girl) and participate in anything labeled as "high adventure", and if she doesn't like uniforms the same way you didn't, just find a crew that voted not to wear a formal uniform.

Nowhere near ready yet, I tend to jump the gun, she's 15 months old. Good to know all this stuff though.

This not news to me. On another sub-forum on here, My young cousin was the recipient of a Busse Boss Street, and a custom sheath. Both made for him before he deployed.

Amazing!

man girl scouts for me was the BOMB! but my mom was the leader so we had an awesome time. It was not very "girly" but we learned a ton of stuff.

Ok, then you haven't exposed her to a politically correct "scouting" organization yet. I have been very unimpressed with the GSUSA troops I have seen, mostly because they tend not to care about morals and values, but also because they lack severely in the leadership and camping departments.

But that's the very small sample that I have seen, the former Girl Scouts that I have met (upwards of 30, mostly) remember when it was just like Boy Scouts, but for girls. You should also take into account that I live in a very tourist oriented state, so there are plenty of hotels on the beach for them to pick from.

If you can find a good GS troop, it might be worth it up until she turns 14, but I like to think if I had a daughter in the future, I would teach her everything myself up until she gets old enough to learn on her own, and let her and a good Venturing Crew finish the job, with my input of course (my input mostly consisting of being an NRA consultant for the Crew, pistols, shotguns, rifles, black powder, .50 cals, it is a coed program after all).

Edit: Just saw Cap'ns post:

This is a prime example of how GSUSA used to be, they helped form one of the beloved BeckerHeads. Current viewings have proven there are more sheeple leading GSUSA troops than BSA troops, which is pretty scary when you think about it... Present company excepted.

Wow Derek! I'm so glad your troop got what they needed.
Actions such as these speak volumes about the character of this group.

mmm, men around a fire... teach a man to make a fire, he's warm for a nite. SET a man on fire, well, you know :) warm for life.
