It seems that I've been wrong about tantos

If you like kiridashi and warncliffe blades, you should enjoy an angular style tanto.
I... Never put two and two together. I knew the tanto felt like a compromise on a Wharncliffe, but never thought it was a hodgepodge of the two.

Don't take what I previously said wrong, I like the tanto. Cake to sharpen (sadly easy to ruin too), cuts well with proper geometry (it is still a knife), and it appeals to my inner and severely repressed mall ninja... we all have one. I just like sweet blade shapes like a Wharncliffe or leaf blade more.

Isn't that funny? Everybody loves a kiridashi but they poo poo on tantos!

Exactly!

An "modern" angular tanto is essentially nothing more than a kiridashi/wharncliffe hybrid.

+1 for that Utilitac II tanto! I love the way the angles catch the light in this shot.

It's just a tough workhorse of a knife, and for the price you definitely don't mind abusing it.

Always thought tantos look a little weird. But after reading through this thread they dont look so bad anymore. The point about tantos being a combination of a wharncliffe and a drop point makes a lot of sense. I love my spear point cold steel code 4 so maybe I should pick up a tanto one as well.

And come to think of it, I dont really slice much with my edc. I usually cut with the tip or push cut with the base of the blade. Very little slicing.

I would say take a look at the emerson roadhouse. Its tanto tip has a slight curve to it and so does the belly of the blade, this aids you in performing several types of cutting tasks. The handle also lines up with the blade tip in a less than conventional way which is pretty cool for detail work and poking through things.
