Getting ready to build a new forge, going to use 2" of kaowool and was thinking about adding a coating of itc or satanite to the walls of it. I"m building a waste oil forge, y'all think the coating will be worth it in effeciency?

I know what the concept is, I was wondering how you set up a burner. Pressure tank, gravity/ventury? Or are you using a furnace type gun?

My reply to you was meant very tongue in cheek :P

I'm going to use Oliver's "The Brute" burner, it's simplicity itself. 17" x 2" diameter pipe with blower on one end, a 9"x 1/4" pipe with a 45 degree cut at the end and it enters the burner tube at 45 degrees. I'm going to use a gravity feed with the tank elevated slightly above burner. The blower will be controlled with an el cheapo router speed control and a 2" gate valve to further control air flow. The oil feed will be controlled with a 1/4" valve and some 1/4 or 5/8 tubing with a cutoff valve at the tank side.

I'd feel better if I could find a way to put some chicken wire on it just because I'm a redneck. lol

The charts I've seen show that the oil has a higher btu rating than propane and as far as costs.... I can get all the oil I want for free since my brother is a chef.

Thanks for the explanation. As a mechanic/bodyman here in the 'great white north' for many years,I'm familiar with wast oil furnaces but was unsure how you would set up a forge that way. Will you get suitable atomization with the oil just gravity fed? I would consider putting the fuel feed entering from the top of the air supply pipe so the oil drops directly into the airstream.Just the first thing that comes to my mind anyhow.:confused:Good luck with it & let us know how it works. Sorry to get off-topic.

From everything I have read the ITC 100 is very useful and suggested. I wonder is I could use it on my homemade perlite/cement refractory.

The plans for the burner show it at an angle in the middle of the burner tube. Cooking oil isn't supposed to need atomizatioh as much as heating oil or used motor oils. Supposedly, a lot of foundries are going to waste oil for fuel. From what I've seen, the main issue seems to be getting the temp down so you're running a forge not a foundry.

I'm going with APG 32 instead of ITC, you'd think that in 5 forge builds I'd have used it before lol.

The ITC-100 should be applied to the surface of the satanite, which has been applied to the surface of the kaowool.
The ITC-100 is a proven product and is well worth the money.

Anything you can do to focus the heat in a forge is a good thing. Keeping the heat from being absorbed by the forge walls, cuts gas usage and improves heating inside the working area of the forge.

Good luck with your project, Fred
