I met up with Rick and his cousin Scott for their overnighter today. As I'm just at the tail end of a cold, and am also of sound mind, I decided to spend the day with them but not do the over-nighter. It is supposed to get down to -16oC tonight, so lets see how warm they are when they stroll in tomorrow morning. They camped out at a Provincial Park literally in Rick's backyard.

Here I am at the Wildertool forge waiting for these guys to put on their packs and go already....

After getting the frame up, Rick and his cousin had a little chat about some movie, I think it was Brokeback Mountain or something like that....

A little bow drill action. Who says you can't whittle with a big honking knife?

Well, that is how I left them. Rick and Scott did not bring any sleeping bags or thermorests or anything. I think they each had an extra wool anarak coverlet to put on and their intent was to sleep by the long fire in the center of their tipi. All the best to them. I know it was starting to chill down pretty good as I was leaving. Hopefully Rick will report in on his adventures tomorrow morning when he returns.

Will you be able to properly unthaw him tomorrow morning? Or will he have to hope to not have frozen by then? :D

I can't wait to hear his side of the story.
Judging by that cut, I'd say the Bushido is just about sharp enough.

I love winter camping. The saying is that "A warm camper is a happy camper." That boy is happy!

He knows what he is doing, and I am sure he will have a great night. I am incredibly jealous :D

Looks like a blast ... I'm sure they were both happy to have you there "lending a hand":D

It's good that you got some pictures, k.

Rick, when you read this, tell me why you tied all the poles together at the top, rather than just 3 and then laying the rest in the 'V's.

Doc

Man - you have to give it to Rick - he puts it to the test. That is impressive.

Look at all that dust - he told me he prefers the double stick method - I think all the dust for this one that makes a coal - falls through the bottom and starts the fire.

Nice.

Great pictures kgd! I'm going to throw another log on the fire, grab another beer and look forward to their report tomorrow:D

I've never seen poly-tipi with a fire inside. It'll be interesting to hear how much heat it retained.

Great pics:thumbup: I see those Ph.D analytical skills at work evaluating the wisdom of spending the night outdoors tonight:D...
