If you search the archives you'll find a number of members succeeded in persuading the doctor to let them cut the cord with a knife of their own (though more tried but failed), and there are a number of old threads discussing what knife to use. Of course anything sharp could do the job, but you want to use a special knife and give it to the kid later....
