It's a tool, not a weapon!!!

Respond to this next time by repeating the same phrase back to the person, then pick up the nearest chair and threaten to beat them to death with your new weapon for being so stupid.

I heard (or read) a saying once,"It's better to have a knife and not need it, than to need a knife and not have it."
i'm sure i read that somewhere recently......;)

The attitude of the general public with regards to our pocket cutlery can be very wearing, sometimes i find myself so astounded by the ignorance and stupididy of a comment that i lose the ability to formulate a proper response. I'm pleased to say that it has been a while since anything like that has happened to me. Sorry to hear of your experience.

I learned not to get angry at them. They don't know better. Plus, when I get p!ssed at them, while still holding the knife, now they really freak out, and look at me like I'm a psycho. So, I don't take my frustration out on them -- it closes the door for possibly educating them, and they dig in their ignorant heels even more. their reaction is emotional, not rational, so the explanation has to reframe how they FEEL about the knife, not what they think about the knife. First make them comfortable with you, then make them comfortable with your knife.

I think of it like the movie The Matrix. They don't even know they've been brainwashed and are living an illusion. I gently take them through the process, keeping them at ease, and describe the productive uses I've gotten from a knife. The "rescue" stories that i di with my CQT Magnum work very well. It explains why I have such a big blade on me. I explain that with a smaller weaker knife, I'd have been unable to help two people out who were in a jam.

Darn it Brian, there you go being realistic and logical...

It sure feels good to think about doing what I said, while in actuality most of us have to go ahead and follow something like what you said.

I don't get it. If I'm not mistaken, I think more people are killed by cars driven by humans yet how often have you heard someone comment to a driver exiting their vehicle, "Wow, look at that weapon."

"The knife is the tool, I am the weapon."

A simple phrase that explains it all.
