Yes

Look, I just plain like hatchets, and tomahawks too. Who doesn't? They're fun to use! But after 30+ years of mucking around in the woods and cutting/chopping/splitting various things that needed cutting/chopping/splitting, I never reach for a hatchet or hawk first. (unless I'm in a safe comfortable place and just feel like having some fun with it :) )

A stout knife is much lighter to carry, far more versatile, and yes, safer. The whole point of batonning a blade is to focus cutting power exactly where it needs to go with a minimum of effort.

It's extremely unlikely to cut your damn leg or hand off when properly batonning a stout knife... many's the person who's cut themselves badly with a poorly-aimed axe/hatchet/hawk swing.

If we're talking about clearing a forest to make room for a homestead or garden plot, of course I'm gonna want a serious felling axe... or preferably, a chainsaw ;)

But in most camping/survival/homesteading/yard chores situations, chopping and batonning with a stout knife just plain works better, with less effort and far less danger to one's self.
