Its been 30 years since I made a knife

withg that much meat you could probably do something more sculpted looking but it would be hard to say without making a mockup and playing with some playdough or somthing
something like this

but the coffin handle would lend itself to the rustic look you mentioned earlier and would probably be easier to do while getting some practice in

I should have added its 5/16" thickness.

I have a LA-CO Markal I've been drawing shapes in the handle area with, what I have come up with is, I want the spine to stay straight, not sure if I want a Ricasso or Choil seems like they sometimes kill some shapes but a choil would be a smart way to start the handle giving a defining line between the blade and the handle and a definite place to start.

I think what I'll do next is to make the guard and see how that will influence the handles shape.

This will keep the file look on the top and the bottom of the handle for the rustic look as well as keep the large
size, I have large hands, and of course this will be my keeper.

Now time to decided on the handle material

working on a file in its harden state is no easy task.
after cutting the choil I grabbed a file to do a touch up and it slid off like a boot on ice.
seems like everything is a one shot deal with this project,

anyway here I am to date, I'm thinking I'll cut the finger groove, and look for an antler or bone
for the handle, my son thinks I should use canvas. any input with other types of handles would be appreciated

My Father always said and I pass this on to my children, "if you can draw it, you can build it"
so far this knife is following the hands sketch pretty good.

Still not sure what I'm going to do for a handle, I would like to use
antler but its hard to find a 6" set of scales.
since the steel has a lot of carbon it has a darker grey color so I'm thinking
a darker color handle would look good, ebony is on the top of the list or some rose wood.

but now since I got my practice in its time to temper the steel so I can drill some
holes without having to buy a 50 dollar drill bit that may or may not make it through
4 holes, bit more then 1" total.

I was talking to a buddy he said bring it over
and he will hit it with the spot welder, he said it would heat it up in the spots I want the holes and that should soften it enough to drill.

I've decided the file is all the handle the knife needs, it looks good and handles good, and is well balanced.
not sure where I was reading it but in the post it stated, the best knife you can make with a file in its file hardened
state is a prison shank. Well I guess this file is my prison shank the best that can be done with a file.

I need feedback, so, what do you all think.

If it were mine I would think it unfinished every time I looked at it. A hidden tang would be a good way to keep the file look on the ricasso. Jess

I thought about it, to mount the scales I would need to grind the file smooth on both sides so the scales would sit flat with no gap caused buy the file teeth.then the edge would need to be mated with the scales which would put a shine on the edge.

all that would be OK but that's not the look I am after, here is the wood I was going to use for the handle

its a nice slab of ebony, but as the knife sits all it needs is a bit more polishing of the blade to bring it to a mirror shine.

The knife is exactly what I was looking for, taking an old worn out useless file and making a usable tool.
from old to new.

I like it

If you're happy with it, call it done, get yourself some of aldo's 1084 and start on the next one.:)

Yes, but first I need more then a 1x42 belt grinder and sand paper.

I'm working on getting the forge back up and running, replacing hammer handles that have long since dried out.
and a 2" belt sander needs to be built.

Now I'm off to get surgery on the knee so I can walk with no pain, I should say walk because sometimes the pain is so bad
I just stay in bed. anyway,,,

Thanks for all the advise, I'll log back in when I'm up and running

Thanks again.:thumbup::thumbup:
