GDay Guys, its been a looong while...Lots of dramas with the workshop and the day job in general. Still managed to work on knives in the background and am now more or less back in the swing of things. Heres what I've been working on the last month or so. I posted this on one of the other forums a week ago.

My biggest knife to date. O1 carbon steel - 14.25inches, stock removed - my forge was busted... 1/4inch thick with a reasonable distal taper. 60RC at the edge (tested) with a triple drawn spring tempered spine with a dead soft tang. Satin hand rubbed finish. Sculpted 416SS guard. Handle is black Micarta and my favourite - Ringed Gidgee, mortised and mated. Its one of the tighest fit-ups I've ever done. The photo of the top of the handle - I challenge anyone to find the joint... :D :D :D !!!

Balances 2inches in front of the guard, but not as heavy as it looks. Sheath is inlaid with Australian farmed crocodile skin from Queensland. The customer is a local guy - the same guy who got my Sheffield Bowie with Sheepshorn (won this year's Best Forged Knife at the Aussie Knifemaker's Guild Show in Melbourne).

You can see from the last pic the size comparison - the other knife is my personal Bowie, which has a 8.25inch blade.

Tell me what you guys think... Thanks in advance. Jason.

WOW! A big one and as beautiful and amazing as the rest of your knives. :cool:I so dig your sheaths, too!

man that is sweet. My thumbs cramp up just thinking of all that hand-rubbing. :)

Outstanding my friend.

That is one of the most gorgeous bowies I've ever seen, and quite a handful too:thumbup: Now excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard:D

I love it. Do you figure you could forge one that big?

You took the thought right out of my head. Before my forge fell apart a few months ago, I had managed to rough forge a 15inch blade - a bit narrower than this one, though, and it was purely for practise. My temporarily patched forge will only handle 8inch bars of steel at this present time, but I have an order for a 15+inch forged fighter, so I suppose I'd better get started building that new forge...:) Jason.

Absolutely gorgeous, and somehow a sheath to match it!!

A couple of ideas, just my personal taste:
1.) The guard looks a little bulky for me...even on such a big blade.
2.) I would prefer a more traditional choil than the current choil with the choil cut-out thing (the scalloped cut-out).

Again, fantastic!!!

Always appreciate feedback ! The guard was a customer design - he wanted a lugged guard sort of look, and originally it was in brass. If it were 100% my way, the guard would be a simple oval guard or one of my leaf-shaped asymmetric guards, in blued steel. The scalloped "thing" in the choil is my very, very, very modified idea of a Spanish notch.

A word on SIZE ... I stand 173cm tall or just 5foot 6-1/2inches, so the knife looks a whopper in my hands. Nonetheless, I wanted to build something that would make my combat bowies or my 10inch Sheffield Bowie from earlier this year look like a pocketknife ! :p :D

Thanks again for all the replies. Jason.

WOW!

That is one mighty fine looking piece of cutlery!

My thumbs cramp up just thinking of all that hand-rubbing.

I'm with Burchtree. Hand-rubbing that beast must have been quite the chore. But the result was worth the effort obviously.

thanx a alot jason i cant wait until i get it in the post ,about the guard i think it looks great i dont like small guards on big blades .the guard and knife turned out exactly like the drawing you made for me thx:thumbup: :) . il post a picture off the shefield next to the bowie when i get it ive tried to post pictures off the shefield before but i must be doing something wrong because it doesent work, think you need to subscribe to bladeforum or something just got a digital camera and im not very tecnical with computers ,also want to say the sheats you make are the best i have ever seen. my crocodil sheat for the shefield is super tuff and very well made ,i have seen to many sheats that are made out off to thin leather and mediocre quality, your sheats are made to last
my next knife from you in the future iff youl be taking orders, i know you are busy being a doctor and so .. will be a big blade with a viking type off handle halfmoonguard and pommel simmilar to
scandinavian short swords off the period (viking ) handle i mean and with hamon on the blade
hope my spelling is ok

Jason, you're a true artist. A great knifemaker. Even if you didn't know how to make knives, your sheathwork is so good. That much talent is rare.
