The new Military was on my desk when I got home yesterday. Did someone tell me it was big?? Oh my, yes it is. Flicks open really nicely too.
I am in awe. This is a pocket knife?
Got a Starmate on order too.
Thanks again all of you who helped with my choices.

You get used to the size and after a while you don't even notice it. Good choice BTW. If you really want big, handle a Vaquero Grande from CS. I'd like to see someone top that.

Ptn - The Military wasn't designed for urban carry, although I must admit that I carry one regularly. The original concept was a "Military sidekick", liteweight, strong, saafe, dependable, easy to clean, good edge retention, more "tool" than "fighter".

There was no "size" limit in the "bush", so we didn't consider that a restriction. This was the size that I felt would be the best "all around" folder. Larger or smaller, I felt would be less useful.

The Military lends itself well to daily carry. I carry it in jeans, work trousers, and dress trousers with no problem.
Try it a few days and you will get used to it. My Starmate is not a great deal smaller though the blade shape makes it seem smaller.

Out of curiosity, Sal, do you carry the plain or serrated edge model? As far as size goes, I think that handle weight and width are relatively more important than length. I could probably carry a knife with a handle approaching 6.5" to 7" in length provided that it was light weight and thin, which the Military is. Thick and heavy handles are what seems to bog you down.

I LOVE my Military. I'd give up all my knives before I gave it up. (I don't have any customs).

Best production folding knife anywhere, at any price.

Ptn,
Like you, I also found the Military a little big compared to my other daily carries (rotate between wegner Jr., EDI Genesis 1, BF Native, Pardue Axis, Small Sebenza and now a Sydie Viele). For me, what really helped was the neck sheath from Mike Sastre. This really made a big difference on the Military and made it much more convenient to carry on a normal basis. I never go fishing/hiking without my military around my neck.

I am getting more accustomed to the size and have to agree that the slim package makes it seem smaller in the pocket.
By the way, this knife is a serrated "newstyle" model in ATS-34 and I feel just fine about that. (I'll have to wait awhile for a cpm 440V blade...I guess there is a long line of us waiting for plain edge Starmates)......anyway I notice that the inch of plain edge on this Military has an edge ground on one side only. That is to keep the edge lined up with the serrations, right? I shouldn't change that, correct? I was looking at a previous thread that seems to have asked this question, but I'm not sure if I understood the answer.

Ptn - I've left it as a single bevel on mine. I mostly use the tip for starting a hole or scraping and the single bevel works fine. It is also a very thin angle.

You can change it if you want. On combination edges, I prefer the plain edge portion to be double bevel, but a fully serrated blade, the little plain at the tip is fine in Kataba (single bevel).

Sal,
Thanks for the information. I followed the factory angle and managed to get it a bit sharper. I'll also follow your lead on this one by keeping it single bevel.
