For quite a few years now we have been in a drought down here, But nothing like this year. Lake Okeechobee has been at record lows for about 6-7 years running now. But yesterday it was down at its second all time lowest level ever in history,(or at least recorded history) Holding at just a fuzz below 9 feet. At this time of year we should be at 13.5-14.5 feet. I live right down the road from the Big O and we took a drive to see it last weekend and it was heartbreaking to see the lake this way. We stood on the dyke and where water as far as the eye can see usually is, has been replaced by scrub and weed grasses. It makes me worry about all the folks and the critters that need that lake to stay healthy to survive, not to mention an important fresh water source for millions.

But alas, an answer to my prayers.. RAIN!!. Its been raining all night long last night and is still raining now.. In fact as I write this, my computer just flashed me a Flood Warning and Tornado Warning by the National Weather Center website for my county,, and I am smiling at the prospect of it all.. Bring it on baby!.

Anyone else here in Florida getting rain today in your neck of the woods?

been real dry in syracuse also-the only good thing is it will keep the skeeters at a low count -

LOL.. Darn it. I forgot about them. We grow'em big as mocking birds down here too. Now where did I put my Cutters.:(

We are getting it pretty good in the northern part of the state. Started last night about midnight and it is still light right now. I was hoping for about 4 days of it but it looks like it will taper off tonight.

So are there really cypress swamps down there? I figured they would have been cut out of s. florida years ago...

Glad you guys finally got rain. A month ago things were very dry here and there were some really bad fires going on, some not too far away and would make the air so bad my nose and eyes stinged from the smoke.

There' nothing like the relief of a good rain knowing that the house will be safe until 'next time'. Things are well soaked now from the rains, and things are growing well.

I lived in Margate, near Ft Lauderdale for about 1/2 a year. I thought I knew what rain was living here in the Republik , heck the rain here isn't nothing compared to the firehose pressured blast from the sky down there in that part of Florida :D

I never thought it could rain like no tommorrow and be hot at the same time :D

We are dry here in NW Florida as well. We are not as bad as the NE areas but a tropical storm or a mild Cat 1 would be welcome now. That reminds me, time to check the generator to make sure it still runs well.

I am located in South Florida, Coral Springs to be exact and we got well over 5 inches between Friday and Saturday morning. It was wonderful. The air smelled so fresh and clean and I swear I could hear all the plants cheering. From the looks of the clouds I expect we'll get some more!

It rained pretty good in Deerfield Beach last night. Only a few sprinkles today, though. The reason the lake is so low is because the nitwits let the water out last year in anticipation of the storms that never came.

I live in the northwest portion of Palm Beach County which still has good rich wetlands with Cypress Swamps, but unfortunately they are only remnants of what was 100-150 years ago.

Raining in Gainesville, but not very hard. I'm hoping they'll finally get Lake City put out.

Hey there Mac,

Thats funny, "The plants are smiling" is what I told my wife this morning!.

BTW, I grew up in Coral Springs and moved there in 1969. You should have seen that place back then.

Yea, you don't know how mad this makes me. They have been doing it every year since 2001, or at least since I have been monitoring them, which is the year 2001. They make the same mistake over and over every year.:thumbdn:

I've been in Coral Springs since 1986 but to see this place in 1969 must have been a sight to behold!

Do you believe these morons from Water Management were still pumping water out into the ocean yesterday after Barry's wet God send.. Hasn't anyone over there ever heard of building a reservoir?.

Hi all! Knifemaker's wife checking in and saying, thank God it rained in South Carolina! We had over 2 inches of rain accumulate in 2 days of steady, beautiful, wonderful, wet, dust-settling, plant-quenching, RAIN!

Hey there cousin Lora,

Glad your getting some much needed rain in your neck of the woods! Please say Hey to you old man for me.:D

Blessings to ya'll

SunnyD, I know how you feel, buddy! I live about 400 miles north of you and we didn't get near enough rain up here to make up for what's missing, but it sure was nice to see some anyway. That rainy day yesterday was good for body and soul. Now, if we can just get half a dozen more tropical storms like that one it really will help us all. This one helped a lot with the fires, though.

Our Lake Jackson next to US-27 went mostly dry several years ago like it does maybe every 20-25 years. The bottom falls out of it when the limestone caverns below it collapse. It's a cycle that has repeated for all of recorded history, but this time it's been even worse because of the below normal rainfall amounts we've had since the bottom gave way. Lake Jackson is in pathetic shape now, and it may never return to the great bass lake it once was. It looks terrible!

Hey, I've been meaning to ask you who that is holding the big Bowie in the photo next to your user name. He looks kind of familiar, like I should know who he is. My mind wants to tell me it's somebody famous back in the '50s.
