It's getting hot out there

It's that season again, when it's so hot you have to be careful or you can get sick. I hate the heat, and easily get raging headaches from working in it. I got one of these fans from a friend, they come up real often in the scrap bin at any plumbing heating place mostly only needing a new motor. Come up alot at hammer ins for tailgating too. Only need a 1/2 or 3/4 horse motor, and they move ALOT of air. Highly recommend them.

I can't do hot n humid either.
Is that from some kinda HVAC setup?
I'd love to get a hold of one. The shop I work at has a corrugated tin roof covered in a layer of some kind of black tar. It just radiates heat down on you in july and august.

Looks to me it is a furnace fan. The smaller ones are from preconstructed homes. They are often called "squirrel cages". They are great for mving dust as well. Frank

They have these mini-split ductless ac systems -13 SEER rated 12000 BTUs can be got new for around $700 or less or up to about 1500 for a 24000 BTU Mitsubishi or something with a 20+ SEER rating . Theyre much more energy efficient than regular AC & come fully charged and no pressure gauges or coolant needed, fully DIY install, just a 3" hole connects the inside remote controlled air handler to the compressor unit mounted on a shelf above ground on the exterior wall. I just insulated my garage and paneled it with cheap flakeboard and will get one of these pretty soon - i got a 13 SEER 12000 BTU for my 400 sq ft garage - 100-120F out here till Oct

I think I would have passed out years ago without mine.
They can be had for nothing at most recycle places and move a HUGE!! amount of air.
Mine is on wheels for using all around the shop.
I also put an adjustable leg on the handle so I can direct the air where I want it.
Sometimes you might just want to hit the ceiling or maybe swirl air around the shop or even blow off the flloor.
Who knows.
Truly one of those tools I couldn't live without.
Good thread, Sam.

Safety note: A former boss of mine was checking out a running squirrel cage fan in our shop, and leaned in a bit too close... it grabbed his necktie and made his face turn all kinds of funny colors

We put a piece of screen over the intake side and made him tuck his tie inside his shirt whenever he came out to the pressroom ;)

Down here in the South, we're past the point of using fans or blowers. It's just too stinking hot with heat indexes over 100 most days with the worse ahead of us. Trying to work with just a fan on you is like having someone holding a hair dryer on ya!

I had plans to install A/C in the Garage this year, but then we decided to sell so I held off. It's either get up before daylight and work or wait until around 10 p.m. to start working. I hate the heat!

I know a guy who was wiping out a fan like that and didn't have it unplugged. He managed to bump the switch somehow and now he can only count to 8. Just make sure you always unplug them before doing any work on them.

Nothin like a good squirrel cage fan to get the air moving! I've got one that I'm using to build an air filter for the shop with. Very versatile fans.

Absolutely!
My next project is putting one up at the top of the wall to suck hot air out of the forge area.
My neighbor has one and it works amazingly well.

Drink a lot of water...I know when I'm dehydrated is when I'm vulnerable for dangerous mistakes in any shop.
