I began this as answer to Guyon in a FEEDBACK thread Recommendation? countycomm.com? but realized I'd be hijacking the original topic. Still, bags are important equipment, so they get their own thread here.
I've been working around a few bags this year, trying to get the right mix.
I got a Maxpedition MPB which didn't do what I wanted but turned out to be a great mobile office/briefcase. Big
I got the County Comm BOB (Bailout Bag), IS-100 (72 Hour Bag), Sat-Com Bag, and XL BOB.
The BOB works for what I wanted, a field bag for walks in the woods: camera, binoculars, etc. and lunch. Pockets all around the outside and a divider inside. Highly recommended if you want accessibility in a compact package you won't overload.
The IS-100 is immense. You cannot imagine how big: when it's full, it is almost a cube, it's so wide. Tremendous capacity, tough as can be, incredibly well organized pockets everywhere. When I toss my laundry in it, I need a double washer for what it can carry. If you're car camping, this bag will hold everything you need, and you'll be able to find it when you need it.
By the way, the Responder Pouch/Bag fits perfectly in one of the IS-100's smaller front pockets.
The SatCom bag is "cute". It is very similar to the S.O. Tech Go Bag, but without the 3 big pockets on the outside. It's a long narrow bag with an across the chest strap, which is broad, especially on the shoulder, and very secure and comfortable. Long flat zippered pockets on the sides for small items. It makes a decent day bag, especially if you modularize to keep everything from falling together. It carries weight well, like three 2-liter bottles of soda. I think it's going to end up as an emergency/medical go bag. I can grab it and go, and still have hands (and shoulders) free for other gear.
The XL BOB is the original reason for this review. I wanted to tell Guyon what he's getting.
I hesitated to get one but I'm glad I did. The photos don't show how much larger it is than the original BOB. It's a great daily bag which holds a few items I toss in, like a snack pack, and will hold a load of items if I stop off to shop, approximately 3 plastic grocery bags worth. It has the same outside pockets as the original BOB, but the pockets are larger, so I could use it as a woods bag if I needed more capacity, with everything in the correponding BOB pockets I'm used to. Fully and heavily loaded, it surprised me at how comfortably it rides with the strap across my chest.
Just placed an order there for their new large B.O.B.
