Hell yeah!!!! Give me a '67 Chevelle SS any day over any of the cars of today. I'd rather have a Humvee from the army than one from a dealer, and the new Viper does not do it for me, though I love the (I think) the 500+ HP.

500 HP is nothin'. The MR2 can make that with not too many modifications, and without opening the 'bottom end' of the engine, at all. I still like torque more than HP, and am currently lusting after the Stingray 'Vette that's for sale near my house, even though I can't afford it. Viper does nothing for me, either. Thre are better cars for less money. A slightly used Ferrari costs the same as a new Viper and, while it's not quite as powerful, I'd rather drive that than a Viper.

Plus, have you noticed the shape of a Viper? I think there's something Freudian that can be said about them....

e_utopia; several things; 1) to quote you, "500 HP is nothin'" ARE YOU NUTS? Have you EVER driven a car with anywhere NEAR that much power? My Uncle has a 96 Viper GTS. Stock, it has 450HP, which is a lot, but he got his kicked up to 550. I've driven it with the mods, and I was hyperventilating, and my palms were sweating. I lay down rubber just trying to make a simple turn to merge with traffic! 550 is an awful lot of horses, and a hell of a lot of raw power to have on tap! (Also the nagging thought that this is not my $100,000 car, and I REALLY don't want to be alive if anything should happen to it!)
wink.gif

2) "A slightly used Ferrari costs the same as a new Viper." What model? I really doubt that you'll see a $160,000.00 Modena on "sale" for anywhere near the GTS price of about $80,000! If you do, tell me where, and I'll get a loan!!!

3) "Plus, have you noticed the shape of a Viper? I think there's something Freudian that can be said about them...." The Viper, especially the GTS, is a VERY curvaceous car. I assume that's what you're referring to. If you are gay, I could understand you not appreciating the curves quite as much. However, I LOVE the car and every sexy inch of its curves!

Talking about "sexy" cars, or curvacious cars, you can't beat the Porsche Carrera 911 on that one (not the new ones, they just suck)

.

I had a 250hp 92 Daytona IROC (thank God for the internet and Gus Mahons 12second turbo 4cyl MINIVAN) that ran WELL inside the 12s and could out corner most cars on the street. The MR2 isnt designed for 500hp.Tell you what. Tout MR2 all you want but, if you want to invest the money to make 500 legitimate, dyno proven HP go ahead. But, I doubt that with that 500hp, your MR2 would handle daily driving as well as the Viper would. Besides that, the suspension and safety mods would put cost effectiveness of it all into play. you can buy used vipers decently priced now and hop them up to the point of 10 second drag cars or corner carving terrors Also, if youre gonna talk turbos, theres an 87 GN here with over 500hp and its not very streetable at all. Sure he drives it, but its made to do one thing GO FAST and it doesnt like stop and go traffic much. The MR2 and Viper are 2 different ends of the spectrum. The viper is raw gobs of gut wrenching torque and brute power, slightly disguised in a sexy package. The MR2 is a road hugging sports car. besides there are more than a few, slightly modified Porsche 993s that have top speeds of 200+mph and still get about 14mpg daily driven. As for me, a 327 with 400hp in a 3600pound 55 chevy is enough to run a 12.46@112mph, which is a hair raising ride.

Besides a 426 Hemi cuda in sublime green with a slapstick shifter and a linelock is my drink of choice. that or a Z8

I don't think he wanted to be called "gay". Anyway, I definitely would prefer a Ferrari over a Viper though I thought that even used Ferraris were tons more than a NIB Viper (

BTW, what does "Freudian" mean? I've heard that expression before but I don't know/remember what it means.

sigmund freud was a famous phycologist. he related everyhting to sex and anuses. like the phrase "anal retentive," commonly used to suggest someone with an obsession with neatness, comes from infancy. according to freud, babies go through an "anal stage," during which some sh!t a lot and some don't sh!t nearly enough. the ones that hold it in for fear of soiling themselves will supposedly be anal-retentive forever.
freud also said that all young boys go through a stage where they are sexually attracted to their mothers while holding malicious grudges against their fathers. called it the oedipus complex, after a greek mythological figure who unknowingly married his mother after killing his father (oedipus was away for many years and didn't know who his parents were).
he was a weird dude. i think that he was the one with the problems.

edit: "freudian" is a term commonly used in the case of an accidental allusion to sexuality during conversation.

500 HP is nothin' means that 500 HP is easy to attain, for less money. Not that 500 HP is no fun.

The engine in the MR2 Turbo can make 600 HP, on the street (all emmission controls, etc. in place). It has made 980 HP in full-race spec. It's a rather impressive piece of machinery. As I said, I still like torque more than HP, so 8's, 10's, and 12's are what makes me drool, but I still am impressed by a 2 liter 4-cylinder engine making 600 HP on the street. (and yes, that is accurate)

True, a Modena costs a lot more than a Viper. But Ferrari makes more than one car. Ferraris are actually quite affordable, among high-end sports cars, and they have class, too.

It's not the up-close details of the Viper that are a problem. It's what body part the enitre car looks somewhat like. Anyway, I was just messin' with ya' on that one.

Nate: did you hear? They may be bringing back the Hemi. Drool....

Actually the 2001 Porsche 996 (911) Twin Turbo is considered by many, if not most, to be the best sports car in the world at any price, period (I know it's not cheap at $108,000 or so, but the competition ranges up into the many hundreds of thousands of dollars). The only reason the Boxster and/or base model 911 don't enoy that title is because (you guessed it) the Turbo is so remarkable. Some folks don't like the look of the new 911's (I do) but one thing must be remembered--there is no substitute. Aren't we off topic?

Please take your seats gentlemen; oh, and flip 'em if you've got 'em.

to put that in perspective I know of a drag racing snowmobile (on asphalt) that ran an 8.86@142mph quarter mile run. The fastest Ive managed is a 9.47@138mph on my skidoo.
Im a bit faster on ice but we dont race quarter miles on ice and its not timed...just trap speed. But I have topped out at 146mph before. I dont reccomend it. It gets really hard to breathe and you tend to get nervous, and deaf.

Most of the cars coming out now (not sports cars, just regular sedans and what not) are advertising "240 HP" or the SUV's which are getting to the mid 300's it was a nice change to hear 500 HP, I know it's not the highest but it is still more than most cars on the road.

Dang, I need to update my page... I've installed the rotors, pads, plugs, and headers already. Working on 2 6.4" visor monitors and a custom PS2 install in the cup holder between the front seats.

a neighborhood friend of my family (whos name was Buzz) had a DMC (Delorian Motor Cars) and the license plate said (you guessed it) "RUN DMC" Anyway, they are interesting automotive anomalies to say the least. With stainless steel bodypanels and windows inside windows, they are fun. Especially considering I was about 9 when I saw it. The best memory I have of it was when he asked me to clean it and handed me a scotchbrite pad. Freaked me out. It especially freaked my dad out when I tried to clean his truck, using a scotchbrite pad.
However they arent exceptional performers at darn near anything. I still want one though. So far my list is 1) SubLime Hemi Cuda or Challenger 2) RUF Porsche 3) Studebaker Avanti 4) Ducati 916 and 5) Ferrari powered Formula 1 car
My girlfriend has a hard time with me during car show season. Speaking of which try www.syracusenats.com

PS I did hear about the fabled Hemi making its triumphant return. Its supposed to be fuel injected and the only thing holding it back is getting it california emmisions legal. As it stands, for 8,000 USD you can buy a 528 cubic inch Hemi and put it in anything you wish. Thats the biggest production engine ever created in america. Chevy has a 502, Ford has a 490+ (I think, I know they have a 460) Mopar has the 528. The closest to 528 was a caddy engine thats 507. These are of course modern V8s (the Vipers V10 is 488cid) There were a few rolls royces and the like, V12s and V16s and even a W24 (yes W- thats a V16 with another angled 8 cylinders) that were made in the 20s and 30s that had over 600cubic inches. The W24 was an engine designed for a railroad train engine and was placed in 6 or 7 cars. Sorry for making this so long...please dont close us down <begging>

Cameron, yes I have been in the DeLoreon, in fact I've driven that too. Suprisingly, it handles much like my Isuzu Impulses. Gorgio Gagario (butchered that one
smile.gif
) did most of the design work for the DeLoreon and the Impulses (I've got 3
biggrin.gif
). He's the guy who did the GTO and all the really "weird" models for VW and Opel too. Anyhow, the DeLoreon is a sweet ride. It feels like a tank, but moves like a so-so sportscar. It's only got a 1.9, but it hauls for that little engine (which is in the back of course). It really does live up to all the hype.

Oh yeah... his license plates say 88 MPH, if you've ever seen back to the future
