My wife's family lives in Arkansas and I've been toying with the idea of relocating to that area for a long time now.

I had the priviledge of having grandparents nearby and I want my boys to have the same. We're also going to try our hands at developing some land in the area.

Part of the reason I shut down my shop was so that I could properly prepare for this transition.

We will be leaving Maryland on June 28th and settling in the first week of July.

Got a new job lined up (unusual for me.... ), first day = July 6.

Another fringe benefit....:D.....is that I'll be 4 hours away from the ABS School of Knifemaking. Arkansas is practically crawling with knifemakers, so there should be some opportunities to improve my craft as well.

The goal is that by this time next year, we'll have our house built on a nice piece of land. We hope to stick around for a few years.

Well, that's all I can think to say.....maybe I'll remember more later....

Anyway, just wanted to share with y'all...

Dan

Dan,
Are you a native of maryland?
Arkansas is a different culture.

On the other hand, you will be much closer should we try to have a mini-convention in Oklahoma!

Congratulations Dan, and best of success. My wife and I moved to NC from NJ 11 years ago. All of our children (4)have been born here, and I learned to engrave here on the GI bill.

I visited AR to help renovate a church a few years back. It was Hot! All those kife makers might need and engraver now and then...

But Ithink we will be in NC for a good while.

Take care,

Tom

Dan,

I grew up in South Arkansas. Let me know where you end up.

Good luck.

Dan--sounds like a great opportunity. Arkansas is quite beautiful from what I hear. It's also a rock-hound's dream-- some of the nicest quartz crystals in the world. Good luck with your move :) .

I didn't know there were knifemakers in Arkansas. I've heard of toothpick factories. Oh, wait. Never mind.

Best of wishes!

Good One!

Congrats, Dan. I'm sure they are friendly out there.

Ar Kansas. Bizarre State. Clinton came from there. But they voted against Gore-

I know little about the place. Tell us all once you've landed and have a roof.

Dan,

I feel honored to have been able to pick up my Santoku from you in person, but it appears that I shan't have that opportunity any more! What a bummer. :(

Well, best of luck on the move, and I hope it goes smoothly and easily for you.

Don't forget I need some more of those santokus from you, after you get set up.

Perhaps one will be forged and with a hamon???

(The one for my sister should be in 420J2 or better, H1! *laugh*)

Dan?

Congratulations on the big move, the new job, and the chance to learn an entirely new culture (maybe more than Danny in Japan!)!!!

First lesson: El Dorado is pronounced "elll doe RAY doe", NOT "el doe RAH doe." Check to see if they have "English as a Second Language" classes for your kids.

Second lesson: Fundamentalist Baptists are seriously religious. Seriously religious. Learn the local culture before venturing opinions of any sort.

Do not drink beer on Sundays.

Armadilloes are the only other creature that can contract leprosy.

Many of the tractor-trailers in Arkansas have brakes.

Take all snakes seriously.

Have a wonderful experience.

With the new location. I'm an easterner gone midwesterner meself. Hope the change (job, location, etc) serves you well!

" Fundamentalist Baptists are seriously religious. "--Kis ain't said rat root! Was there in the 80's fer 2 wks...They have white people who scare white people down dere. If I was a follower of the Old Ways then, I'm sure they'd a-smelled it on me and burnt me on the spot. Course, my spiked hair and trench coat didn't exactly make me "blend in" in AK.

Welcome to the middle-lands, ya inlander!:D:D:D

Congrats Dan!

Arkansas is a duck hunters paradise. (if ya like to duck hunt that is :D )

Maryland is one of my least favorite states. Good cultural stuff but the whole state is rule crazy and crawling with cops. Plus all the suburbs. I thought I was going in circles one time because I kept passing the same subdivisions, chain stores and restauraunts but it was just that it all looked the same.

Arkansas, being a poor state like here should be a lot more wild and free I'd think. Less rules and cops.

El Dorado, I spent 13 years there. I have fond and not so fond memories of the hole.

Don't worry about the Baptists, look out for the snakes.

Camp De Soto is a great place, I went to camp Orr once when on a OA trip, but I spent almost every summer for 10 Years at De Soto. You'll like the Ticks, they are there in every imaginable size.
