It's now official - moving to AR

Whereabouts areyou moving to in Arkansas? You're right, the state is crawling some big names in knifemaking, and Missouri isn't doing too bad either. The Ozarks has some of the most beautiful land in the country -- enjoy your stay. :D

Thanks for the tip, cliff...

DIJ - I grew up out west..but lived in Savannah, Georgia (read: Deep South) for about 5 years while doing the "school thing". I figure I kinda know what I'm getting myself into, but my wife insists that I don't....:D.... I do suscribe to the laid-back mentality, though....at least, that's how I feel...those who have met me could probably say better if that's right or not.

I guess I forgot to mention specifics....her parents live in NW Arkansas, in the Rogers/Bentonville area....otherwise known as "Wal-Mart-opolis"....(headquarters are there). I thought I would really be done for, leaving the big city to bound around with a bunch of hooligan rednecks...but the area is actually in the Top Ten Fastest Growing Areas in the USA" list (something that everybody I interviewed with was polite enough to mention.....twice :D ) and the firm that I'll be working for is a pretty classy operation. So, I really don't know what to think now....

biogon - you really made my morning with that one....still chuckling....hopefully you'll make it to the Blade Show sometime? I'm on the waiting list for a table there next year...;)....how does 1084 w/ a hamon sound? I was planning on making one of those anyway....we can talk more once I'm settled in.

Kis - LOL!!

I'm hoping to take advantage of the wide openness and get a sizeable chunk of it for myself....:D....if I do, it'll be open to anyone to visit, and hopefully we'll have a few Khonventions and Hammer-In's there....

Semp - all I got on the hunting brain right now is bowhunting for deer, and catching some bass.........2 things I know I'll be able to do....the bow season is 5 months long...

Rogers is a good town -- not too far from ol' Springfield either. :D

Bentonville,

Home of the monster itself.

I know nothing of the Bentonville area, we lived futher south and other than floating the Buffalo (good times) our trips up north didn't really stick in my mind.

I think you will like Arkansas, even the democrats are fairly normal. The weather in the north will be more moderate than El Dorado's. You will be in Fly over country, and with the state colored the right color in all those political maps. Urban camoflouge normally requires a bible to be carried in the left hand.

If you build in the sticks, buy yourself something that shoots snake shot or else get good at snake killing the BSA way. (a stick and a sharp knife). Gardening is great, we had about 2 acres in town, great two gardens about 30 feet by 25 feet (i thought they were larger but my mother corrected me) one was for eating and the other was agricultural experiments.

No gators that far north, but the fishing is good still.

Buy yourself some yo-yo's too.

Great news Dan! I hope that everything goes smoothly and my best wishes for you and your family.

Yea Dan, I could see where moving to Ark would pose a problem with coming to the Va hammer-in. Good luck dude.

Congratulations and best of luck to you, Dan! :)

My maternal grandfather was born in Arkansas, but I've never been there myself. I had some friends who were put there by the Navy. I'm sure it doesn't apply to the entire state, but they were less than impressed. ;)

I'm about to embark upon a similar, but much less drastic change myself. This suburban flatlander is headin' fer the hills of WV in the next few months, and I don't have a job waiting for me.

You like guns and knives. You'll fit right in here ;)

So when ya comin to Sweat ya Arkansawyer?;) :D

Best of luck in your new venture Dan! I really do hope you and your family will love it there. I lived in Praire Grove many years ago, near Fayetteville, and loved it there. Lake Weddington was just a few minutes away, great bass and other fishin!:D

The other day I was channel surfin' and came across the OLN channel and lo-n-behold, they were having a big bass tourney at Beaver Lake, which is about 10 -15 minutes away. I've never been much for freshwater sort, but I'm thinking now would be a good time to change my view....:D

Yvsa - I start sweatin' at 6 in the morning and don't stop until long after I go to bed...:p......(I know you mean the lodge......but you sure you wanna see me nekkid?... :D....course, couldn't be too much worse than Nasty.....:p)

Mac - don't worry about it, you'll do fine....lemme share a lil' story. I was in college back in 1996 when I met my bride-to-be. We were displeased with the school and wanted a change. So when we got married, (and after the honeymoon) we packed all our stuff in a 5'x8' trailer and hit the road, headed for Georgia. Had never been there before, had no job, no place to live. Somehow, we made it. I don't mind living' by the seat of my pants....this time, we were really fortunate/blessed to be able to get a job ahead of time, but I was prepared to go without if I had to. Still working on the "place" though....

Dan?

Couple of other things:

In all probability, you will meet some folks who will define, for the rest of your life, "charming and well-mannered" down there. Courteous in a way that is difficult to find in the Mid-west, and impossible to find in the East. To this day, Don Hitt of East Texas, springs into mind when I hear the word "Gentleman."

And you ain't seen humid yet, neither in a sauna nor a sweatlodge, until you've seen Arkansas humid. Mix that up with some yellow pollen days, and you literally have to MOVE the air out of the way to take each step!

You will have fun, probably.

It's just life.

My pleasure. I do too... lots of great memories. :)

I am trying my damndest to make it to Blade next year... I will probably still be within (sort of) driving distance and it's on my list of Very Important Things To Do Before I Die. The timing is also a lot more convenient than for the Chesapeake show, so one of these years...

HELL YES.

That is all.

Pen, welcome down! You'll like down here but the growth has been tremendous the last few years. Property prices have skyrocketed. Lots of places to camp and hike. I just got back from a trout fishing trip up by the dam on Beaver Lake myself. I live probably about 45 minutes away and work in Springdale, which is right next to Rogers.
Ysva it's a small world. My wife is from Lincoln and we go through Prairie all the time. We walk around the Battlefield Park somtimes and go the local crafts festivals there. I don't know if you've ever been but I think they are about to have an annual Native American festival at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge just outside of Eureka Springs. Never been but I'm going to see what it's like.

Speaking of humidity it is ungodly humid in WV right now. We've had rain for weeks on end. I got off work today and was up at my buck pen with the pitchfork hauling manure and bedding out that the creek had got up in and got wet and when I came back in looked like I had been in a rainstorm I was so sweaty.

I didn't see anyone nekkid! We're a respectable bunch of ndns and Sweat in swimsuits or shorts, the ladies in same or preferably long dresses like the Lakota. However I have been in traditional non-coed Sweats, didn't bother me none.
But if we tried to do one here we would have the Catoosa Police as well as Wagoner County's Sheriff Deputies out here wantin to know what in hell was goin on!:p  :p

Sweaatin long after you go to bed makes me think you're trying to brag a little there Danny Boy.:p ;)

Plenty respctable, but I admit that I *have* been thinking of making a nice breechcloth for my next visit... ;-)

Yvsa - you got me on that one...:D

Nasty - according to WorldNet (via www.dictionary.com), a good synonym for breechcloth is "G-String"..... :p

Arkansas and Maryland are EXACTLY alike. You'll have a seamless transition.
Is Not! Billy Jeff Klinton did Not Come from Maryland! :p :p  :p :p

Dan,
You and your family will do fine, you have the character. My best wishes follow you.
