It's OK to say, "I'll take it if your deal falls through!"

I've sold and traded a LOT of knives on BF since I started here many years ago and I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who's ever said,

"I'll take it if your deal falls through!"

or

"I'm next in line!"

or

"I'll take it if he doesn't"

or

"I'm on deck!"

or any variation thereof.

Out of all my sales/trades on this forum over the years
(especially over the last 3 months) there have been a
high-enough percentage of times when the person who
wanted to be "next" actually ended up with the knife,
that I'd say it's DEFINATELY worth-while and appreciated
when someone says they want to be next in line.

It may LOOK stupid when you see it in a for-sale thread
but, from my experience, it works and is worth-while AND
VERY, VERY worth-while to be VERY polite to those people
who post or email you that they want to be next in line if
your deal falls through.

Most of these have been deals that have been made with
people over-seas who back out, but not always. Now, while
this may be somewhat annoying, when someone agrees to a
deal and then politely emails me and sincerely appologizes for
having to back out of a deal, I usually just say, "No problem"
and let it go... expecially since they were so polite and
appologetic about it, after all. (I'm cool like that.)

But, in those situations, it's SO nice to have those backup
people who posted or emailed that they wanted to be next
in line.

I've even offered the "next in line" people discounts for offering
to be there "just in case".

"I'm on deck" is just a weird Bladeforums phenomenon that, in my
opinion, happens to be very valid, useful and convenient and I
wanted to give my opinion on it.

Done that. Been there.
Sometime a seller needs cash FAST, and the first guy needs a couple of days or so to pay, well, there's your big chance!
It can be pay off sometimes.
FullofLead, Happy Holidays, and stay off the vampiristic cereals.

Right on. Being new I was wondering about this. I will not hesitate next knife...I mean, time :) Thanks guys...any etiqutte threads for us noobs would be helpful.

if ya want something its never a bad idea to post ya will take it if the deal falls thru i got a crawford perfigo like that and i was not #2 was #3 lol.

On a related note, I've communciated with ol' fulloflead about a couple of knife deals (that I ended up not doing) and he practices what he preaches: he is always very reasonable and polite. I guess those Transylvanian finishing schools know their stuph.
rats...

I agree that the "I'm next in line" ploy is worthwhile.

However, I'll respond to WM's post and add that I would be pissed if I was first in line and a seller couldn't wait a "couple of days or so" for me to get payment to him. If the seller needs instant funds via PayPal, then his thread durn well ought to state just that.

Certainly, there are limits, and I've probably bumped against them a time or two when it came to getting a money order in the mail. However, I've always let a seller know if I've had trouble getting to the P.O. for a money order, and I've kept up a good line of communication no matter what.

Finally, Dracula is always immensely polite. Even when he's chewing on your jugular. :D

Having a couple of sales going right now, (and having made a trade with fulloflead) I can tell you that he's right on the money with honoring the second chancers. The thing that makes it ALL run smoothly though, regardless of the outcome is good communication. I've got one knife committed for sale right now. I think I'm awaiting a M.O. as that was the buyers preferred method. I asked about paypal but haven't heard back. I'll give it till the end of the week (long enough for the M.O. to show up) and if not, put it back out there. But communication would help tremendously in knowing if someone else were "on deck".
By the way, this story is not to rip on my prospective buyer. Just an example of how communcation can help every transaction, for both sides equally.

History proves that Klingons and vampires can get along. Vampires just drink their blood wine straight from the source.

Been there. Yes, it's a great idea to mention this, but sometime it doesn't happen. If you are selling, it's best to include everything, like if you'll only ship inside the US, whether your price includes shipping, Paypal fees etc.
I seen it both ways, but it's always, always, always, better to know these things up front.
