So, I'm in a pickle about buying a new knife. Most of my folders are greater than 3" blade length, most around 3.5". I only have two (well three, but one I'm selling) knives under 3", a mini grip and a dragonfly zdp. I need recommendations on a new knife. Requirements as follows:

2-3 inch blade
Under $200
Modern folder, no traditionals or slipjoints
Non assisted or else can be de-assisted easily
Steel other than VG-10, 154cm, S30V. No Aus 8, 440, 8cr etc.
I'm a huge Spyderco fan, but am very open to brand.
Not a big titanium fan, but will consider it for the right style.
Open to lock style, not picky.
NOT a wharncliffe fan
This will primarily be used as an edc to work (in an office).

Thanks in advance for y'all's help.

spyderco techno, cool small beefy folder that is different from your other two

spyderco caly3 cf, more zdp steel with carbon fiber

Benchamde 707, though it does have 154cm, its really just a different mini grip

spyderco sage series, s30v again

if you want to switch up your steels, get a dragonfly in H1 or superblue. Sell the zdp dragonfly and buy the Caly3cf with laminated zdp blade.

The techno is pretty cool. I also like the chapparal titanium. Hmm, may get that, but would like to hear other options first. I like the caly 3. Don't wanna sell my dfly, love it and have used it extensively.

Fällkniven has a couple folders that fall into that spec, if you consider the construction modern enough: P, U2, TK4, TK3

  • Spyderco Techno (2.55" CTS-XHP)
  • Boker Pipsqueak (2.5" S35VN)
  • Benchmade 755 MPR (2.9" M390)
  • CRKT Eros (3" Accuto+)
  • Spyderco Chaparral (2.8" CTS-XHP) CF
  • Spyderco Chaparral (2.8" CTS-XHP) Ti

I can vouch for the Benchmade 707, I've been carrying it in my pocket as an edc blade for 2 years and It served me wonderfully until I got my ZT 0566, de-assisted of course. It holds a great edge, it's light, comfortable in hand so no hot spots, ease of deploying, overall one of my top 3 knives.

How about a Spyderco Native lightweight in earth brown with a CTS-XHP blade? Yes blade length is just outside your specs at 3 1/16" however actual cutting edge is 2 5/8". $90 new

Thank you for y'all's input. I know its a fairly narrow window I'm looking at. I have 4 knives with S30V, and overall I've been very disappointed with it, exception being my strider. I don't know if I just have bad luck, but I have each of my knives with it is a different brand, and I'm hesitant to buy another. Or even S35VN, as I've heard edge retention is worse. I've been very impressed with the XHP in my Manix 2.

Based on my research and y'all's suggestions, I've narrowed it down to:
Spyderco Techno, Chaparral, Caly3, Domino (I know its over 3" but barely), and possibly pre-ordering the dice, not sure I wanna wait for it to come out though.

Spyderco Techno, look in the exchange for a Brous Bionic too, Boker has many too, but I am really hit and miss with the brand.

I love my techno but I enjoy using the Caly more. Don't get me wrong, the techno is comfy in the hand (initially surprised me how much so), but the caly kinda just cradles into the palm.

Ordered the caly 3. Will have it Saturday. Still looking for other options though. Desperate to sell my Brian Tighe mini-Tighe-rod without taking to0 much of a loss on it, but no luck so far. Cool knife, just doesn't feel right in my hand and its too nice for me to use IMO.

Expletive expletive expletive!!!!!!!!!

Caly 3 came today, from that south american river name website, and its a fake! AH! I've never had any issues ordering from them, its not like the bay. Sure it came in a Spyderco box, but no paperwork, the blade looks funky, and just says "Japan"--no Seki City. With all my other spydies, it says the name of the city and country it comes from. And then it had the Golden, Colorado symbol on it. Huh? Knife was marred and smudged too. Carbon fibre did not feel like carbon fibre. Will post up pics tomorrow in the spydie forum. Very, very mad.

On another note, I'm gonna do a knife sell off probably this weekend, and instead of the caly I'm gonna use the funds for a sebenza or a mnandi. Yes I'm drinking the @#$%^&* koolaid.

The caly 3 only puts japan on it, it does not put the city. Blade might look funky if you mean the laminated line on the blade.

Hmm, still doesn't excuse the missing paperwork. I'm returning it anyway, don't like the feel, its marked up (obviously used, and the grind is off. So I guess I got a bad one, if not a fake. I don't know, the carbon fibre doesn't feel or look the same as my gayle bradley. Oh well, my bad luck either way. Just smeems fishy to me, doesn't have the same quality feel as other spydercos.

The Caly 3 says Japan and Sal's logo on one side (clip side). On the other side it says Spyderco ZDP189 / 420J2 and the Spyderco logo. The laminated line is not even nor always match on both side. The carbon fiber is of the very smooth variety. The paperwork is missing a lot of times.

Curious, did you buy it new from the river site, like new from their warehouse deals, or from a third party seller on their site?

New from them I think. It qualified for prime.
