Its that time of year, what traditional are you taking in the woods

My go-to whitetail hunting knife is a Buck 118, with a Buck 103 in the pack, a Buck 110 on the hip and a Buck 307 or 301 or 303 or Schrade USA 8OT in the pocket. I’m set with those. OH

Thanks Chuck! Give the Buck 110LT a chance - I bought a Smoke Jumper variation about a year ago and use if for fishing all the time (on the hip). I’m usually in lightweight clothes when fishing, its barely detectable in its nylon sheath and if a wave happens to soak it, no harm with the stainless blade and synthetic handles. OH

"Knife"?
Why limit yourself to just one?
If I make it out to the boonies this year, I'll take a Buck 110 or 112, of course.
I'll probably bring along at the very least my Western L66, Mora 612, Buck 877, Rough Rider Moose, SAK 'Huntsman' (or a 4 blade Scout/Camp knife in place of the Huntsman)
and a large Stockman.
If I'm taking my TC Hawkin rifle out for a bit 'o big critter hunting, I'll need my fur trade era historically accurate and period correct "patch knife" (AKA: "straight razor") as well. :)

Admittedly, I would not be "under knifed" if I only took a 110 or 112, but what fun would that be?

I’m also more of a hiker/backpacker; just spent over 40 days backpacking in UT and NV. Carried an alox farmer and paired it with either the Dixie Stockman, Northwoods Presidential, or Buck 301 Forum Knife. Also had a CRK fixed blade with me. I am very much not a minimalist.

Previously posted pics I think:

Thanks OH. It’s a great great knife. At one time I had 6 Randall’s but I’m down to 2 now and I use both. The model 3-5 Hunter is a fantastic hunting knife.

I usually take a few different knives that I have bought throughout the year along with me to deer camp. If there is plenty of daylight and I'm not in a hurry, I'll experiment. I just haven't found anything that works as well for me as a Buck 110. Especially just a plain newer 110 with 420hc because it is so easy to sharpen. I won't bash any other brands, but a $27 110 is hard to beat. Usually I'll try a different knife, and after a few cuts, go back to the 110. The blade geometry, thickness of the blade, just everything is perfect. I can process a whole deer with a 110 and a good bone saw. I have picked up a 101 fixed hunter that is the fixed blade version of the 110, but I have yet to try it. Imagine it would have to be good.

I'm thinking about just carrying a 112 in my pocket while I'm hunting and having my 110 back at the camper(about a 5 mile 4wheeler ride away from where I hunt.) 112 would be a little smaller and do most of what I would have to do in the mountains if it's too tough to get a deer out, but in most scenarios, I'd be able to load the deer and clean it back at camp and grab a 110.

I love this time of year...
All the guys are in the woods chasing deer.
That leaves the trout streams pretty empty and me all by myself.
It means Big Fish attacking the smallest flies, hungry and active after the hot Summer.

I agree! The big browns are always biting near me, but I'm always in the deer woods. My plan is to always tag 2 huge bucks within the first month, and then be fishing for the big browns, but so far in 50 years, the 2 huge bucks early has never happened....

It is the Big Brown time of year.
I hope this is your year to tag your deer early and join me on the streams.

Having moved last summer and no longer being a hunter I've been scouting out new meandering grounds. So far I'm finding more uplands than woods which is fine with me. The fixeys I've carried on my moseys so far this year are a newish Todor Hristov puukko and a somewhat seasoned H10.
