My mother-in-law knows I like knives, but she knows very little about quality knives. Anyway, she got me a Jaguar knife which was made in China and it looks like a rip-off of the S&W Swat series. How ironic, someone ripping off S&W. Anyway, I know I'll never carry it, but I wouldn't have the heart to get rid of it. I can't even muster up enough enthusiasm to sharpen it as it won't even cut melted butter.
Any suggestions? BTW, anybody else have one?

Maybe it'll make a great "first knife" for a young relative. That way you can "pass the good intentions on" so to speak. I've got a collection of similar knives, the prize of which is of course the Franklin Mint's "Bear" folder.

Man, I think that I'd either carefully pound that wonderful knife into a tree-stump, and do a "side-impact test" on it with a sledge-hammer, or send it off to Cliff Stamp for some "destructive testing".

A knife like that one can only lead to despair and danger!..

It was thoughtful of her anyway.
If you like her, put it away and years from now when she's gone, you'll remember her.
If you dont like her, send it to Cliff.

Heh, she put thought into it. That's more than what some folks do when they buy a gift.

I would keep it; doesn't take up much room, and if she ever asks to see it, you'll have it. Besides, if nothing else, do it cuz for your wife. And like Dave said, if you like her, it's something to remember her by in the future.

Several years ago my aging mother, knowing I'm fond of eagles, bought me a Franklin Mint bowie with an eagles head for a pommel. Ugly POS that she paid around $150 for. Don't have the heart to get rid of it and have to make sure it's prominently displayed whenever she vists.

Hey, what's wrong with Franklin knives:rolleyes: I have one and it has ONE FULL OUNCE OF SILVER in the handle:eek: Very pretty, actually. Nice zipper pouch:D I'll probably end up using the pouch for some other knife that is more deserving.

Yes, keep the knife, and it may forever hold a special place in your heart. Anyway, you won't lose any money by keeping it, while you could lose a friend if you give it away.

I happen to have a couple of Jaquar knives that are decorated with inlaid materials like Turquoise. I got them (cheap) before I knew too much about knives. They are nice looking but pretty lousy knives. I don't carry them but use them for things like opening packages if I'm at the location where they are kept. They are actually pretty sharp and seem to keep their edge fairly well. I would probably not bother to sharpen them and will consider them as disposables.

Several years ago, my Father(who knows nothing at all about knives, and will use a knife for a Phillips screwdriver), bought me a Franklin Mint folder similar in style to a Buck 110. You all have seen this POS; it is the one with the eagle on the handle slabs. Anyway, this is the cheapest POS I have ever seen that was called a knife. Some kind of stainless pot metal for a blade. Brass bolsters and plastic slab handles. The eagles are painted on(Gold Plate), and there are gaps between the handle slabs and the brass about 1/8" wide. I love my Father dearly, but he almost lost me there. I still have the knife and never said a word to him about it. Thankfully, he has never asked about the knife.

I "borrowed someone's photo to try to figure out what kind of knife my eldery neighbor just gave me. The only photo that fits it to a "T" is this one. The knife given me looks great except that it is VERY dirty. I can only see the letter "C". What a strange Xmas gift. But her hear t was in it and she is a SUPER old Lady. The photo: OOPs crash!!!! Try it again in a minute:eek:

This is a 'borrowed photo, but other than the handle material the knife is identical in every aspect. It is old, and very dirty. been sitting in a very dry but dirty "root cellar". It looks like it never cut anything.

I got two Franklin Mint knives this year, which will be added to the wall with the last big one I got, and the Boris Vallejo set (My own damn fault). Mom also sent some cash to a maker I have an order with, but she wanted me to have something to play with on Christmas.

Can't fault 'em for trying!

It's probably just an old SCAGLE, or something, that image you borrowed looks like it was ground by Bob Dozier? Handy looking none the less!

oh and to the subject header, my mother buys me small knives that are very practically useless in about every sense, I just don't make a big deal of it but do show her what some quality blades look like but it doesn't sink in, never has, never will, so I just put them in my knife drawer away from the good ones. It seems that when people know that you are a knife knutt as soon as they come near a place that sells Souvenir stuff and see's something with what could be a blade they automatically think of you and that is a good thing that you do come to mind, if only we could stop them from going the next step...:D

Hi Wolfmann,

That knife is really handsome:). Let us know if you can read anymore of the stamp,etc...

I've gotten some horrible knives in the past. I'll give you a hint...HSN:(.

My wife's uncle gave me a wrapped box for Christmas a few years ago and could hardly contain his giddy joy about how thrilled I would be when I saw his gift. :)

I should mention that this guy, while a good person, is fascinated by gaudy but cheaply made crap. He buys the cheapest but most ostentatious-looking item in whatever category he's shopping in.

I unwrapped it and found a cheap (I'm sorry, I meant CHEAP) Chinese lockback with plastic scales featuring a Chinese dragon. The "mystery metal" blade was painted flat black, probably to conceal that it was made from iron ore crudely pressed into the basic shape of a knife. It felt like I could easily snap the blade in two with my fingers.

God bless him, he was convinced he'd found the crown jewel for my collection. I didn't so much as flinch though, and thanked him very kindly for his gift. It IS the thought that counts.

I can tell it's a Siegle bowie because he always puts that ruler in the pics...

Some clone made by a guy named SCAGEL. EVER heard of him? I figured it was not worth anything, MY LUCK:eek:     :p

My mother is incredibly generous, and has a habit of shopping at auctions, where she buys the most bizarre cheap things. Each year when I go to visit her for Christmas I get a pile of knives. Some of them are very old and rusted shut, and some are the finest in Pakistani bladeware. But it is the thought that counts, and I love her for it.
