I've applied to our local SAR unit

Been doing the SAR gig since the early 90's in Washingon's Cascade Mountains and would urge anyone to get involved!

We're hosting the 2010 Washington State SAR Conference in May, I think the website is down right now, but should be back up soon...

I'm most likely going to be going to that! Assuming the camping situation looks doable (I'm also thinking about one of the preconference classes)... you guys need a huge field like Lewis County used last year so everybody can stay together.

In Idaho, SAR teams are operated by the local county sheriff's offices. I've had a lifetime of outdoor experience but have never volunteered for something like this.

As I'm now 59 and not the man I once was I hope they'll be able to find things for me to do. I hike, have basic survival skills and knowledge, basic first aid, a Land Cruiser and 4x4 truck, good observational skills, map and compass ability, and photography skills. Can also organize and talk on a radio.

I wouldn't think of rappelling or swift water work but I can get the donuts and coffee if that's what they need. ;)

Do we have other SAR volunteers here?

don't worry about the age thing, as River-8 states, there is something for everyone... it sounds as though you've got lots to offer your group, my SAR group has people of all ages, all with one thing in common; the desire to help those in need.

Thanks for all the good wishes and encouragement. Now, I guess I sit back and wait to hear from them.
