Well...I was sitting her tonite watching a program on the History channel about Gadgets. And who would have guessed, the SWAK was mentioned! I've never really liked SWAK's before...but now, out of nowhere, I have a craving for them!

Im looking at the Tinker, Trailmaster and the new Swissflame. Im really looking forward to cliping one of my keychain and using it for dilly dally chores.

One thing still gets me though...I'd say 85% of all their models on their site are equiped with the corckscrew! What is the purpose of this almost arcane today! I mean...how many wine bottles do you open on a daily basis? I can see it being an important function for the "Waiter" model though. (Im just rambling).

Another question....How does the steel hold up? What would it be comparable to?

Thanks!

Edit: (Im taking a liking to the Tinker! I mean...who cares, 12 bucks is nothing. :D)

use my SAK a lot when traveling/etc, and the corkscrew gets used as much as anything, hey i like a good bottle of wine and wife does too.

cool little gadgets though, the ranger is my fav, not too big/not too small, w/all the stuff i need (usually anyway)- the ranger and my leatherman are a good pair to carry when travelling for me.

Here's from their website:
Q. What is the make up of the steel?
A. All Victorinox knives are high carbon, stainless, first grade, A-quality stainless steel, x 50 CrMo. They are tempered to a 55-56 HRC hardness for optimum edge retention. -SA

Most folks find their blades very easy to get a nice edge on them and they hold it pretty good, but not super long.

A couple of days ago I received a Victorinox Workchamp in a trade, and I just gotta say that this monster SAK rocks!

What's the corkscrew good for? I use it to hold one of the small Victorinox screwdrivers (they fit eyeglass screws). Try to tighten one of those screws without a small screwdriver.

I carry at least one everyday and use it everyday, too. The scissors come in handy often, as does the toothpick. With so many to choose from, you can almost always find a model that fits your needs.

The Victorinox knives are one of the best values to be had, dollar for dollar.

On that note...Does anyone know where I can get one of those little screwdrivers that fit inside the corkscrew? The Victorinox Workchamp that I have didn't come with one, but it looks to be a usefull little screwdriver.

At least a couple of the dealers around here have the replacement screwdrivers, along with the toothpicks, tweezers, springs and such. It seems to me that the replacement parts are only a buck or two. Great Outdoor Provision Co and Sharon Luggage are a couple that come to mind that stock some parts.

Yup. Maybe the corkscrew isn't so bad after all. ;)

I definatly love how they have so many different models. I really could do good by buying a few different models and just switch them up every now and again. I mean...they're not expensive at all so why not taste the diversity? :D

How many of you folks out there aren't old enough to legally buy a bottle of wine to use an SAK corkscrew on?

My SAK with corkscrew has saved many a picnic or romantic moment on the beach, also it's a great tool for pulling out packing and gasket material at work.

I got bitten by the SAK bug a while ago thanks to UnknownVT's posts on them. Thanks alot  :D . I just recently found a store in Houston called Swiss Army Knives! I haven't been there yet but I sure am going to check it out to purchase my very first Victorinox SAK. I'm thinkin the Soldier model or one with a little more features. Just too many knives on my list:o .

Im going for something more simple and easy, like the Tinker. Plus I like the translucent models it comes in!

I own about 30 different models and I like them all for different reasons. from the alox classic to the Swiss champ, they all serve a purpose. I can't sharpen very well but I can at least put a razor sharp edge on a SAK. They're definitely a must have as one of the EDC knives that you carry.

A quick tip for carrying your SAK is to attach a piece of paracord(about 10") to the lanyard ring and let the knife hang inside your pants, wrap the other end around your belt. You'll forget it's there and retrieval of the knife is as simple as pulling on the paracord. A bonus is you'll have a piece of paracord with you. By the way my recommendation is the Scientist model.
