steve f,
Thanks for sending the pics. Beautiful workmanship.

To all:
I'm still looking. I've seen some really great stuff so far, but nothing that seems "just right", for one knife. Hmmm, I may have to rethink the whole thing and start "collecting" Bowies.

PhilL,

Nice pictures. I like the Searles style too. Recently I've been taken with the Spearpoint style. Price made some really fancy San Francisco dress bowies. But a more utilitarian one that caught my eye is reflected in the "Ames Rifleman Knife" -- a big spearpoint blade, with a vertical guard, profiled in Knife Digest 2001 and also in a back issue of Tactical Knives. Wish I can find a picture of it on the 'net.

Hal, WATCH OUT! There's no perfect bowie. Some come close and become dear. That's why I end up collecting them. You should go down to Gallery and do a search for HDCharlie who's gotten himself quite a collection. Wonder if he found the "perfect" bowie yet?

Did ever one read part 1 of 2 about Bowies in the latest "Blade" magazine?? Just wondering.

Just some food for thought here.If you are having a hard time picking that perfect for you Bowie style knife out of what is available on the market you might think about designing one of your own, just take the different characteriscs you like from the different Bowies you see and then find a custom maker that will work with you and make that first Bowie a Special one.Just think you might design the next great knife.
If you want to see some neat Bowies (new and old) check out Bruce Voyles site,He always has a bucnch of neat ones there for his auctions...
Sing,I have to agree with you on the San Francisco style spearpoint knives,I have kind of been bitten by them myself and plan on making more of them.
Just my 2 cent worth here,
Bruce
Thanks everybody for putting my name up here on the list of Bowie Makers,I really wasn't expecting it.

Bowies, gota lovem. Some really nice looking ones out here. Keep this one going with more posts and pics.

I gotta say that Bernard Levine should be in on this. In knives 2000 he has a whole section on old bowie knives and they come in all shapes, including near dagger style points, clip points, drop points, etc. I think that the only commonality between most of them is that they are large and strong knives. The Hugh McConnell bowie in knives 2000 looks like a Randall #14.

Sing, that bowie you showed looks a lot like the Schively bowie pictured in knives 2000.

It is a little unclear to me how many knives Ernie is making these days, but his fighting bowies are among the best I've ever handled. In fact, I consider them unsurpassed.

From top to bottom, they are the FB5 (Fighting Bowie, 5th generation), a 10" FB4, a Y2K Camp Knife, and a 8" FB4. All awesome handlers.

Balance and cutting efficiency are incredible. Ernie's distinctive handle design is superb, extremely comfortable and secure.

I have two Black Cloud knives and they are stellar. His design have become a little more specialized then years past but, he still makes an incredible knife if the style suits your tastes.

There are so many good bowies out there in the marketplace, its hard to go wrong when you choose a good maker. I've got my eye on a couple makers myself.

Stay Sharp,
Sid
