i want to thank everyone who gave me advice on what steel i should use being a newbie. i've decided to go with the 1080. it seemed most thought that would be the best. and its pretty cheap to buy! so i am hoping to place an order with kelly cupples soon.

thanks again

Go for it. The important thing is to just get a project going. That will either start you on the road to success or have you banging your noggin against the wall :D Have fun!

1080 is a good choice to start with, I suggest you order enough for 2-3 blades that way you will most likely end up with a complete knife. I burned up a few pieces before getting my first blade done.

i've made a few blades before i never got them finnished tho. i've used 1095 and old files. i havent been able to pursue this for quite a few years and am hoping to be able to start doing something.

1080-CRA is a great steel to use. Also, 1095-CRA is a good one as well. You heat treat it the same. Makes a great using knife.

*sigh* you're probably right, Scott. The poor fella is doomed. No cure, just a lifelong series of painful treatments...

strahd71, welcome to the club... My name is James and I'm a steel-a-holic...

you will just make sure to get a VS (vfd ) one to make it worth your time :)

1080 is cheap. Buy plenty!!! I paid 50.00 dollars for 15 ft of steel. You will use it. Plenty of steal allows you to create and have fun. These guy are right. I went to shop yesterday cut off a 3'' piece of 1080 and made a neck knife. Why because I could. I may cut off a piece of steel and grind and play with shape, and throw it in drawer. Maybe one day I turn it in to a knife. You never know what you come up with. You can never have too much steel.

Ok all you guy with KMG's. I am get one next week. BTW Think i can get away with flats instead of heels while turning tricks

Back around 1960 I discovered hammering in the forge. I gave up knifemaking in the late 60's when I started spending more time hammerin' away at the girls than at the forge. Later ,I tried to do both. Now I am much older (and wiser) and I can't hammer away at the gals like I used to ( My wife wouldn't let me anyway),but my old friend -the hammer- is waiting for me whenever I want. My first gal is long gone, but I still have my first knife and my smithy ( Although I occasionally get this rash on my butt to remind me of the gal).

Stacy, I think that's why most men become wiser with age... we're not like buck with our necks all swollen chasing girls and can actually think things through or have the experience where tasks don't I'm require a lot of thought. I remember as a young soldier at a bar overhearing 2 senior NCOs and one of them said I'd chase the girls but worried about if I caught one. I laughed since I was 19 and they were "old men", my wife reminds me at times that I'm not that young man anymore, especially when we're at the beach :( . Thankfully I have the experience NOT to remind her that she's not that 19 year old anymore either. :foot:

Will that's the fun part, cuz then you get to get chased by the gal:D. . .

Will.

i think i know what you mean. these things seem to just pop into my head and out of my mouth before i can stop them and well the end result is painful. the sad part is i am around 6'6'' and 400 pounds and she hurts me bad.
