I need help again....

I've got my new BAS in my hands. Wonderful quality and craftsmanship. Bravo all around! I cannot speak enough about the First Class organization of HI. Top to bottom!

Now:

I know what I want for my next Khukuri. But I need help:

I want it to balance it's function between EDC carry and weapon.

I want something much lighter than a BAS. Featherweight light. I want it to glide through the air. I understand that with the lightness I'll lose some heavy use abilities. I'm not concerned about the wood chopping aspect as long as it still functions as an EDC carry...

I want it a little longer. Say maybe 18 inches or so....

And I want a tooled sheath.

What are my options? What models can you recommend to me?

Thanks again,

Brian

I would say a Kobra or a light weight Sirupati would your answer for the 18" lenght.

Gelbu Special, sirupati, or kobra. I had a 21" inch GS that was wonderfully responsive, and I liked the model for its more obtuse spine angle and the fullers...For 12" ;engths, check out Pendentive.s Pen Knife.

I have 2 GS's, a 18" and 20.5". It depends on who made it as far as weight and balance goes. My 20" has a neutral balance, feels light in the hand while the 18" is more tip heavy. Both are heavier than my 18" Sirupati's.

I also have 2 18" Sirupati's, one is right on 18" by Bura and the Other is 18.5" by Sher. The Bura is alot lighter than Shers and is neutral in my hand, feels like a feather and very fast.

There's nothing I can add to the good advice above on knife selection. My personal favorites are an 18" Kobra by Kumar and an 18" GS by Bura.

As far as a tooled sheath recommendation - if Terry Sisco is not too busy and you can persuade him, I'm sure he could fix you up a tooled EDC khuk sheath that will knock your socks off for a reasonable price.

raghorn,

My personal favorite is my Kesar 20.5" GS then my 18" Bura WW II.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

I'm getting one very common theme:

Bura makes one fast, light, mean khuk!

Suggestions on how I'd get Bura to make one?

Or where to find a Bura pic center?

Brian

I'd suggest you email Uncle Bill. Tell him exactly what you want -light & fast, 18", made by Bura, etc. He'll know what to do.

Edit - He's picked out more than one for me and I've never been disappointed. :)

IMHO, an 18" Gelbu Special by Kesar would fit your request. Light, fast strong. A great EDC khukuri!:D Kesar makes a sweet GS. I love mine.

Kesar's khukuris cut like laser beams! :D I hope he's OK and we see him return someday.

He sure makes one sweet GS I can tell you. :D

I just received an 18", 22 oz. Seri by Kumar. The difference between that and my BAS and AK is very noticable. Very quick, very light. I am thrilled to have it.

For a fighter, go with one ounce = one inch and you'll have a light maneuveable knuk that's a joy to use regardless of style.

Only problem is if it's got an aggressive personality it may bypass your brain and strike before you know it. Be careful.

These hand-forged blades do posess personalities once you know how to read them. I know it sounds odd ( to say the least ) to claim they have a spirit and personality of their own but there are truths that exist outside of provability by scientific method.

I would agree with the gentlemen that recommend the 18" Sirupati for what your needs are. It sounds like you want something that is not bulky but has the strength to do most of what you want to do with the knife. It may sound heavy for the job you want it to do but from experience with the 18" Siru. I am sure that it will not let you down. The one that I had a good bit of use with was 22oz. It seemed to stay sharp and used on green wood most of the time it just got sharper. I don't know whether Uncle Bill will get any more KNN blades or not. But, Bura will make a very good Siru. Uncle Bill may have one in stock now. I sure would check and see. I know the knife will not disappoint you. :) :)
