I've got exactly 60 dollars.......

You didn't specify a folder vs. FB, so I'd say a RAT3 in 1095, comes in right at $60.

I've got myself a real nice custom in that size coming my way with maroon micarta, and fully flat ground blade of 0-1 hardened to 60. Otherwise I would have lept all over a RAT-3

I agree, also, cardboard cutting and wood carving are fairly distant relatives as well...carboard cutting lends itself well to a toothy edge and high wear resistance like D2 but whittling/wood carvind lends itself to a high polish edge which I've heard D2 doesn't like...and may be better suited to a steel that can take a high polish...maybe zdp 189 is good for both tasks?

New recommendation: Spyderco Caly jr. should be able to be picked up on ebay for ~$60.

My only gripe with ZDP-189 is that it's a bit harder to sharpen. Other than that a Caly Jr. might fill my needs well.

Salt knives are great summer knives but one of the best deals around for the same money or less than you are talking is the JYD II by Kershaw.

Super knives IMO.

A Marbles Woodcraft here : http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=MR80200

Made of good carbon steel, convex ground, free from the "alleged" quality control issues of several years ago....the Woodcraft pattern is a time-tested design that's extremely useful, in a very "friendly" size...it's a fixed blade that you will come back to over and over again...and can handle just about any chore with aplomb. :)

These are in the "best buy" category only because they lack "premium grade" handle material. Still, the resin- treated wood on these particular offerings is handsome and functional....and a real stag pommel to "boot".

With shipping, you will have just enough left to treat you and a friend to a cold, refreshing beverage of your choice.

- regards

Thanks for the link. It looks like a great knife! Only problem is that I have an order in for a 4 inch fixed wharncliffe in the same pattern as the other custom I mentioned. I will bookmark that site and get one in time. Thanks!

I too really like that knife and if I were to get it my only complaint would be the oversized pocket clip. Since I have more money than I thought I would probably ask for your help in regards to the pocket clip.;)

You are a man of many knives there mmmmmmmmotorcycle. I gotta respect that!

I'll turn this whole thing around...what were YOU thinking of getting with the 60 bucks? I know you had something in mind, if you're anything like me, you think 2 or 3 knives ahead!

I actually have a very small collection but try to aim for quality rather than quantity. Thanks!

As for what I was thinking..... because I have 90 to work with I was thinking that a Spyderco Caly3 in G-10 would serve the purpose of wood carving well while still having great utility value where I would probably use it the most. (I've got my SE Dodo for wood carving):p .

Mmmmmmmmmmmotorcycle, the average man in most of the world could take your $60 and buy himself a decent knife, a spoon, a fork, a water bottle, some salt, enough rice and beans to live on for a month or two, a pot to cook it in, matches for his fire, and maybe enough fishing gear to add some swimming protein to his otherwise boring but adequate diet. I think you probably had something more entertaining in mind, though. :D Have fun deciding on your next toy.

An excellent choice gramps! As a carbon steel fan also, I'd go the carbon route myself...maybe a Yellow Delrin Case Stockman in CV...great for the whittling, if the cardboard dulls the blade its easy to sharpen...heck you could have one "dedicated cardboard cutting blade", leaving the rest razor sharp...

I know some folks aren't into the carbon steel though...

if you don't like carbon steel you are a fool because it wilt outlast 154cm zdp 440c,all that crap. for durability(invincibility) it is the best. i would put my 1095 camillus combat knife up against anything you can come up with including d2! bring it mofos:cool:

I dont know where you this idea of Carbon steel being more durable. I have a 1095 kabar and some of stainless knives hold a way better edge a whole lot longer. OBTW D2 is a carbon steel mofo.

You can get a SOG SEAL PUP for about $60. I have one and it's been my edc for a while. It's a fixed blade with partial serrations. If I were to buy it again I would want to go with the nylon sheath instead of the kydex sheath that I have.

hold onto the 60 bux wait a bit, save some more and then buy an RD-9 from justin :)
