I've got rifle fever!

I think Winchester quit making their wonderful .22 lever gun but Marlin still makes one AFAIK and Henry makes old style lever guns that some folks really seem to like (I can't speak to them as I've never handled one).

The 10-22 is my favorite but very, very close is my Remington Nylon 66 (no longer made but still easy to find) and my Rossi pump .22 (I think they're made by Taurus now) which is a copy of the old Winchester gallery .22's right down to an octagonal barrel.

Go right back to the store, NOW, and get the bull barrel. Then have iron mounted. It's not hard, nor expensive, and MANY rear peep sights will fit on 11mm rails if it has the standard .22 scope mounting setup. Any gunsmith can do a sight mounting job quick and inexpensively.

I have the Marlin Model 60 as well as the bull barrel Ruger 10/22, and a few others. If you want a full-size and weight .22 that feels like a fine centerfire rifle, look for a used Winchester or Browning Model 52. I have had the latter for quite a few years and it is a terrific rifle. Great trigger and extremely accurate----but not cheap.

I'm a fool for lever guns, especially Marlins. Can't go too wrong with a .22. I love my .30-30, but if you're looking to get experience on guns, the .22 would be a cheaper option. The .357 would be a good way to split the difference, though. I'm strongly considering getting one of those next.

If you would prefer a shotgun, you can't go wrong with an 870.

2 of the guns that I've had for over 20 years have been my 870 and my 10/22. They are probably the 2 most versatile guns I own. They are cheap to shoot and have so many different loads to chose from it will make you dizzy.
Was the one you saw at Gander Mtn. the one with the carbon fiber barrel? Was there a couple of weeks ago and saw that.

Thanks for all of the great advise everyone!

Out of curiosity, are there any other rifles in .22 that anyone would recommend? Something around the same price range as the 10/22? I was checking them out at Gander Mountain today and the only thing I didn't like was that they almost felt TOO light. There was a used one there with a nice heavy bull barrel and a scope that I liked the feel of, but it didn't have iron sights, which I'd like to have. I'm not too picky about action type. . . If the 10/22 is the best or close to the best .22 auto for the money, what would be the equivalent lever action and bolt action .22s?

I have em, but don't feel the 10-22 is the best or even close until you upgrade to feel (too small stock), and shoot right (accuracy is just so so to me). The one I love and is a shooter cost close to 1K to get that way.

Fun guns and versatile, just not out of the box.

Best out of the box (for me), is a CZ 452. Bolt gun, but as accurate as a lot of match rifles costing and weighing 2x as much. Can be had for less than $300, depends on the stock and set up. Internals are the same from cheapest to highest priced.

Lever guns: The Marlin 39A hands down. I like the older (pre lawyerized), ones. Have 2 Mounties, one from '59, the other '60. Steel and walnut. Will probably cost more than a new CZ, but oh so sweet!

The best thing you can do for yourself is go over to the RimFireCentral forms and start checking all these choices out.

Sub forums for CZ, Marlin, more than a few just for 10-22s and any other .22 you could think of.

The sub forums for the custom 10-22 WILL make you drool!

Check it out. Right now, research is your friend.
