Yeah, what a terrible brand! Tell Tooj and Bladite how much Kabar sucks.

How odd....

My Kabar has never had this problem. Did you have anything else in the box?

just the kabar. i think it was just the hardware rusting, and the rust transfered to the cardboard and kraton. like i said, i still really like the knife. i have no intentions of getting rid of it.

You are probably right. The rust couldn't have come from anything else, other than the metal hardware on the sheath.
And I was joking about the knife. The guy a few comments above me made sort of a stupid comment.

Definetly interesting.... my buddies Flash (sog) 2 rusted a bit (small spots)... funny really.. he flipped out and yet he never maintains his knives..

dude if u put that ka-bar into storage, make sure u wipe it down after u touch a part of the blade... that KA-bar dosn't have the (best) steel to not get rusted and the little oil from ur fingers left on the blade and such can bite ya where the sun dont shine. I have a ka-bar just like that, same color.. (i think).. i dont really use it much, i just throw it in my bag when i go camping i use it as a back-up to my Ka-bar HEAVY BOWIE... WHAT A GREAT camping/survival knife.. and omg.. for $50 you literlly cant find a better knife for the money and philosophy behind what ur gana be using it for... i acctually might buy another 1 just to keep in storage for years down the line when i decide to retire the current 1... although i was looking into the buck-hoodlum...

well enough babblin!!..

GunDude,

If you bought the Knife NIB. Please return it to where you bought it or send it for a replacement to KA-BAR (to my attention). If it is not new, please be aware that many components on the knife and sheath will corrode. Before storing, a coating of some type of Oil or RP is always advisable. If you live near the ocean, you must double your efforts.
Hope this helps.

You managed to rust cardboard! You defied the laws of chemistry! :D

Good knife, I love the serrations on mine. I'm going to have to second the notion that the patina gives it more character.

i bought it new about 4 years ago. it has way too much sentimental value to send in for a replacement (it was the first knife i ever bought myself :D)

i appreciate your offer, but i hope you will understand that i respectfully decline.

The patina is good. Leave it and just oil it. It'll help protect from rust.
On the handle, I'd just try a little oil and steel wool.
Next would be Flitz or Soft Scrub. Some Soft Scrub has bleach though, so be careful.
For long-term storage? Marine Tuff Glide or a light coat of wax. Beyond that... pickle it in cosmoline.

steel rusts. news at 11 :)

metal condenses any moisture nicely, the cardboard will hold it.

only way to be sure is to remove all water and oxygen.

me? i have an old tank from SeaWorld filled with whale oil that's gently aerated with dry nitrogen - all my steel objects go in there. even the car. good for the skin too :)

Gundude,

No self-respecting man would own such a rustbucket!! I'd suggest you immediately put it back in the box, go to the Post Office or FedEx and send it directly to me, and seeing that your a fellow BF member, I won't even charge you the disposal fee.

Thanks,
Jester

rust is no stranger to me. pretty much every knife i have has some corrosion on it. :D

Maybe you should call them politicians instead of knives ... oh wait ... you said corrosion not corruption.

Thanks,
Jester
