Hi Guys :) A buddy of mine has some ivory for me but I'm not exactly sure what it is that I'm buying. I think the large tusk is Asian elephant and was told the smaller 2 are walrus. Does that look right ??? If anyone out there is "in the know" when it comes to identifying ivory I would really appreciate some help.

the small ones look to be whale tooth and the big one is elephant. Please send me the big one right away. :)

Thanks Bruce  You know, I did a bit of my own research and suspected the small ones might be whale tooth but wanted a few more opinions.

i'm going to have to try to find the article i had on how to tell if it's elephant or mammoth by the "growth rings" it was pretty cool

yeah you need to give them up to the proper authority... me:D

The angle of the Schreger lines will tell the difference between Mammoth and Elephant. Mammoth has angles of 90 degrees or less, Elephant has 115 degrees or more.

Big tusk looks african, not asian.

Interesting stuff ! Thanks. Just out of curiosity, as I probably won't come across very many, is there a general rule to follow when identifying african vs. asian elephant tusk ?

I was told they were quite old. Hand-me-downs, all of it, which explains the ??? on the identification

Do you do scrimshaw IG ?

No, I haven't picked up the B72 yet. Still researching equipment. This is a long term project that probably won't come together for many months yet. So much to learn  So little time  Even less money  ;)
