Ivory micarta

Jarret was kind enough to send me the Ivory micarta to try out.

Cutting on the band saw was fine.

I did some grinding with 36 grit and this stuff was tough, like to over heat and clog up the belt.

Taking down the grit to 50, 120, 220 and 400 was only done without to much trouble by wet grinding. Wet grinding kept the belts clear. But it did kill a new 400 grit belt clogging it up really bad.

It does come out nice looking though

Thanks Jarret for sending me this to try out.

Jarrett,

Did you order any of the faux ivory handle material from Jephco Supply? If so, have you tried working with it yet? Aaaaaaaaand, if so, what did you think of it?

Hey Jarrett. Love the knife BTW. Whenever any material you're working with clogs belts, this is especially true for Ironwood, spray the belt with WD40 when it is new, before starting to grind with it. It won't clog after that.

I love the Ivory micarta, but it is tempermental to work with compared to the easier phenolics. I think the results speak for themselves. I get mine from Sheffield also.

Thanks for the info Andy I've never tried that.

i4Marc I have not tried the ivory micarta from Jephco. I have acquired some ivory micarta from the 70's though and it works just like the micarta that I am use to working with. I wish I could find more of it.

Jarrett,

The stuff from Jephco is not Micarta. It's actually a synthetic bone material used in the medical industry for bone replacement.
