I am finishing a small hunter with ivory paper Micarta handle material. This stuff looks good but it's a pain in the butt because any buffing compound or dirt stains the handle. Can anyone give me some tips on the final finishing of ivory Micarta so it resists dirt and stains? Thanks.

It sounds like you haven't removed all scratches from the handle. If this is the case you need to grind with fine paper until they are gone. Start with 220 grit and stop with 1000 - 1200 grit. After that you can buff. I've used white compound for stainless steel, but I guess others are great too.

I sand to 800 grit and then buff with the green compound. Wash with soap and water to get the buffing coumpond off.

If you are using bolsters or a guard, tape it off so that you do not buff from the metal onto the micarta. The buff will pick up black from the metal and get it on the handle. Also, clean your buff good and use lots of white rouge. More compound buffs cleaner than less, strange as that sounds.

Thanks for the advice. After reading what you wrote, I sanded to 1000, then buffed carefully to avoid the bolster metal, and washed with dish detergent to get rid of the compound streaks. Came out fine....

The handle has to be carefully sanded before buffing.I use green RCH final finish compound from R.W. Wilson knife supplies. If you soldered a brass guard, it will blacken the white micarta when you do the polishing.Use some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab to remove the black streaks.
