Ivory vs Stag some input needed

Thanks Bill and Buddy. Buddy stag is my favorite of all handles I have been know to leave my table during the prime selling time of a knife show to sit for hours and look over 4 or 5 hundred pieces of stag to find 20 I like. I heard we might run out and I am Paranoid I now have over 60 prime tapers and will buy more if I find some I like. Stag is durable dependable and beautiful so I am with you. I do love working with ivory each piece is different unlike a stag taper you can shape it to your liking and that is a lot of fun. I am going with the Ivory on this one but I will make sure to have a stag bowie on my table at blade to keep things balanced. thanks again folks for your input to my small dilemma

Well you have me thinking that one of each might be the best way to go. ;) I wouldn't mind a pair as such.

I am very fond of walrus ivory. Great warmth, sensual feel, and variation in colors. Also a certain "richness" while being adaptable to many configurations. That said, really good natural amber stag is a wonderful, durable material that evokes a lot of history as well as palpable contrast and texture. I would generally tend toward ivory, but could be swayed easily toward a particularly nice piece of stag. In either case, I would have to see the individual piece(s) of material before making a choice. Pretty much a case by case basis kind of thing.

Added note: If the knife is actually to be used rather than just admired, I would go with stag. Generally much better grip and durability.

I don't particularly feel that one material is better than the other. To me, the decision would be based upon what the knife is intended to be.
A vest knife is something that carries an air of luxury and gentlemenliness about it, and ought to incorporate materials that reflect the choices of a patron assumed to purchase something like that. Reading the comments, and who said what, I think my theory stands up ;)

Although, personally- for a using knife- I generally would prefer antler. When it comes time to show off to my buddies, well, hand me some tooth, (sorry, terrible terrible pun)

I have never handled an ivory handle knife, i'm wondering if there is significant weight difference between a walrus "taper" or a stag taper handle, and if the weight balance issue could be one of the reasons for the choice between the 2 materials, depending on the knife blade mass.
