Is ivory no longer used in knife handles any more? I assumed I could find some legal sources. But no luck so far. Do any of you still use it, and if so, where do you get it? Thanks.

Interstate commerce in elephant ivory prohibited last time that I heard. Also heard that some states have banned ALL things ivory-like including mammoth, ancient walrus and even warthog tusk.

The mammoth and walrus I have came from Mark Knapp. He posts in the exchange here when he's got some. There are other suppliers, but like jdm said, it's all fossil ivory.

Another word for Mark Knapp. I'm in his shop a lot and his ivory is lovely. He's also an excellent source on legal questions regarding ivory.

If you want mammoth ivory that looks like ivory, Mark used to have really nice blocks of interior mammoth. With that said, a few years back, Charles Turnage told me that he would trade the interior stuff to people for bark because non-knife people would pay a premium for good interior mammoth.

Most people who use Irory (Mamoth Ivory, etc.) like to see it before buying it. That being said, the Bladeshow in Atlanta in June is great for this. If you trust the seller to fulfill your request for a certain size, shape and texture, try Boone Traiding Co. in Washington St. https://www.boonetrading.com/pages/contact.

Id avoid boone trading company. The owner is a now convicted felon and "recovering" meth addict who got busted for knowingly smuggling all sorts of ivory and then became an informant for the feds for 4 years to avoid a lengthy stint in federal prison.

Ivory whether legal or not is such a bombshell for makers that I suggest you don't even utter the word. I live in California the land of the socialists and the politically correct. Even if you acquire legal ivory with paperwork you are hanging yourself out. ANY federal enforcement person can and will confiscate anything that resembles ivory and will refuse you a receipt. Those of you who are lawyers out there please spare me the rhetoric because we are talking about California. IF you have some legal ivory then hide I like it is heroin. I will not use anymore for any reason. Heres a couple photos that I shouldn't even show and these are not Ivory. Larry

I still use ivory, but not as much. I use mostly mammoth and fossil walrus. My elephant ivory only goes on safe queens and is only sold directly and in state.
One caveat is that if you don't have good paperwork on the ivory, don't use it. Keep papers on when it was brought into the USA, and who you got it from. And give papers to the new owner stating that the ivory is pre-ban and legal. Give him a letter of provenance stating your sources, etc.
