IWB Carry

Since I started this thread I thought it to be the best place to share an experience I had this morning. First off I will no longer carry my Mini-Grip IWB! This morning as I was tucking in my shirt one of my fingers caught the thumb stud, partially opend the blade just enough to drive the point of it about 3/8 of an inch into the fleshy part of the back of my thumb.

Bled like a stuck pig.

Tip up is nice in certain siuations but not IWB.

Does Benchmade have Axis Lock tip down models? I'm carrying a Leek right now.

I have been carrying IWB RR for some time now, and it never occurred to me that the practice could be unsafe. After reading your post, I retrieved my tip up Delica and took a while drawing and replacing it. Maybe it's a thumb stud issue, because I can't see how the blade can come out accidentally with this Spyderco model in this type of carry. OTOH, maybe if carried tip down, it could just as likely open while being returned to WB.

However, if there were a real possibility of accidental opening, tip up or down, maybe it would be safer to pocket the knife and forget about IWB carry altogether.

IWB carry for me every day. Usually folders in the summer and a nice fixed blade Dozier Arkansas Toothpick in the winter. I also prefer to have my pockets free to carry other things.

I carry a Leek IWB everyday when wearing scrubs, and Clipped on pocket with jeans or other pants with front pockets.

welp, ya live and learn I guess... :)

IWB is great carry for foldres when you need utmost concealment... I just worry about sweating and it affecting my blade, when carrying IWB

I have used IWB quite a lot, particularly to be discreet and not advertise that I am carrying a knife. It's a great way to carry discreetly, free up a pocket, or carry an extra knife. I usually carry behind the hip at about 8 o'clock (I'm left-handed) but I have also carried up front at about 10-11 o'clock less frequently.

I find it is pretty comfortable, except sometimes if I am doing a lot of sitting around and eventually it just gets annoying. If I'm sitting down a lot I prefer clipped to pocket or loose in pocket. Depends on the knife, too.

I haven't had any problems with rust - sometimes there will be some condensation on the blade when I draw it, but I just rinse or wipe it off at the end of the day and no problems. To be safe though, I use a rustproof Spyderco Salt while doing sweatier activities like running or cycling.

Lately I have not been carrying IWB as much b/c I have been carrying my Caly 3 a lot which has a pretty discreet clip, so I just clip it to a pocket. I will often add another knife to complement the Caly IWB though.

This weekend I was moving to a new place and managed to catch a clip on something while carrying a couch. Fortunately I didn't do any serious damage to the clip or threads, but I learned my lesson! I immediately moved the knife to IWB to keep it out of the way and safe!

IIRC some of the BM axis AFCK's has holes drilled for putting the clip on for tip up or down. actually, IIRC, most are like this, i have an early one thats tip up only, but its a 1st production run FWIW.
