what angle is appropriate for using the spyderco sharpmaker on an izula?

how about an RC3?

are all RC knives ground with the same angle?

They are probably all finished by hand, so the angle is going to vary. I'd suggest starting with 40*.

yup. Pretty much 40 deg. I just convexed all my stuff however if you are planning on doing a 30 degree back bevel with a 40 deg edge i would recommend getting the diamond rods, using a rubber band for a dmt rod attached to the spyderco rod or sandpaper wrapping because with the standard medium grit rods you better get ready with a 2 hour movie and alot of beer, cuz it takes forever. Don't ask how i know.

My Izula was closest to the 40-degree setting when I got it. Same for my RC-3 if I remember correctly. You may have to adjust a little, the hand sharpening makes them a bit inconsistent.

Ended up just convexing the edge of both. Don't use the Sharpmaker on them any more.

All RAT knives are close to 40 degrees (20 on each side) from the factory. they are finished by hand is why I say close.

I use the 40° side for my Izula, and it only takes a few passes to get it back to shaving sharp. I haven't really tried to get it hair-popping sharp yet, but I'm sure you could.

Use the sharpie trick. Take a sharpie marker and colour the edge of the blade. Do two light strokes on the sharpmaker on each side. Look at the blade. If the marker is rubbing off at the top of the bevel and not close to the edge then your angle is too acute. If the marker is rubbing off on the edge and at the middle then you are just right.

P.S. you can make your sharpmaker sharpen at approx 45 degree by placing one of the grey (or white which ever is not in use) under the bottom of the sharpmaker. Rock the base like a see saw, so that the bottom is the same side that you are sharpening on. Why go to a more obtuse angle? If you are sharpening at 40 degrees. When you are done, do some very light strokes at 45 to put a microbevel. This readily takes off any wire burr formed. Don't overly sharpen it for the microbevel just about 5 light (less than the weight of the knife) strokes. Similarly, if you are sharpening at 30 degrees. Finish off with a microbevel at 40 degrees.
