Use the sharpie trick. Take a sharpie marker and colour the edge of the blade. Do two light strokes on the sharpmaker on each side. Look at the blade. If the marker is rubbing off at the top of the bevel and not close to the edge then your angle is too acute. If the marker is rubbing off on the edge and at the middle then you are just right.
P.S. you can make your sharpmaker sharpen at approx 45 degree by placing one of the grey (or white which ever is not in use) under the bottom of the sharpmaker. Rock the base like a see saw, so that the bottom is the same side that you are sharpening on. Why go to a more obtuse angle? If you are sharpening at 40 degrees. When you are done, do some very light strokes at 45 to put a microbevel. This readily takes off any wire burr formed. Don't overly sharpen it for the microbevel just about 5 light (less than the weight of the knife) strokes. Similarly, if you are sharpening at 30 degrees. Finish off with a microbevel at 40 degrees.
