So I've been thinking, the tweener scales are (IMHO) perfect! But the blades are to long (IMO). the IZULA and the bk14 are good blade shapes but the handles are uncomfortable with prolonged periods of time.

I HAVE THE REMEDY GENTLEMEN!!!!!!!!!

Feel free to give constructive criticism!

Get to work! Let's see it in action!

my steel working skills are nill, this was offered up for opinions and comments. who knows, maybe this will turn out like the ESKABAR

I might try and see if i can get a knife maker to make this for me.......

I sympathize mountainmist. I'd like an Eskabar but I have an Izula and the handle is just too short. It's too bad they didn't mate it with the handle from the Izula II, because, for me at least, Izzy II is perfect.

Doc

Large handles, smaller blade should certainly give you more control. I think I have heard of some other members who have said they would like a 14 blade on 16 handles. However, have you tried the zytel scales on the 14? If not, you should, they definitely make a huge difference. Either way lets see what you come up with here!

I have some walnut scales that rkmoore gave me in the PIF thread and I don't find them as comfortable as the tweener scales. I think i will try what Cbear suggested, grind down a 16.

If I had the money right now I'd buy a tweener, cut the handle of, do the same to my 14, and weld the two together. That being said, I don't know how strong it'll be but it'd be pretty cool.

Interesting. :thumbup:Now, buy a hacksaw and cut the handles off. Then, find someone with a welder, and weld them back together!

(That is how the 14 was created...)

I have both, I guess I will have to try. I'm going to order some 1095 and stock-remove it in the shape of this

Maybe this is stating the obvious - why not just jerry rig the scales onto the Izula or the 11/14? It wouldn't be full tang, mind, but there'd be plenty of metal underneath the scales. MM, you made some wood scales for your 16(?), right? Maybe just find some Plexiglas or some other stiff material same thickness as the knife you're gonna use, trace on the tweener scale, then cut out the handle of the Izula or 11/14, sort of like the backspacer on a folding knife, then sandwich everything together. No steel grinding/welding, and you get to try out the feel using the tools you have. Or, just go find a DPX HEST to wrap your hand around: full size grip with a 2½" blade....see if you like it. I know it's not a Becker, but mine was made by Rowen, who also makes the 12, so....

At least you'll know if you like the feel of it before spending money and time on something semi custom.

I just striped my 16 and traced the IZULA on it, I think I'm going to grind it out of the 16

It is going to be a lot of work with it being hardened steel but it will be worth it.

Do what you will, but one thing I learned when I was working at a printing shop (I was 15) was that it's better to work smarter, not harder. One of the pressman would say that to me at least once every time I was working - MM: ask yourself this question: If you already have the blade shape you want, why grind another when you can put the handles you want on the blade you already like without trying to grind hardened steel? Of course, if you like doing the fool's errand (my opinion) then go for it. Or maybe post your idea over in the Knife Maker's forum and ask the pros what they think. As a friend of mine puts it: why skin a fart to save a nickel and ruin a 25¢ knife? My 2¢, of course.

I think the better way would be to make some kind if liners around the handle of the izula or 14 so the tweener scales will fit around the existing handle. That way you can keep the original knife and not have to worry about messing up the heat treat on the 16 while grinding.

I didn't know you could skin a fart. I bet fart skins make a great emergency tinder.

Try not to screw your heat treat on the 16 as you grind it....also...that poor 16. There has to be another way....like you could send it to me.

Exactly. DJ, you so smaht!

Very explosive. Be careful to keep them hermetically sealed until use. Otherwise....you've seen ignarts....
That's one of the more odd Yankee expressions. Mostly said about someone really cheap, but not too smart. Not in this case, of course. I certainly wouldn't call MM cheap.

Or....me.
