Izula in .....

Black Kit # 0010 just arrived from Derrick! F'n sweet!!! It's already on my hip. I'm very impressed with the quality of kit, blade edge, RAT, KSF, etc... You guys have definitely converted me!

So I mentioned when I was bi&%ing in an earlier thread (totally uncalled for!;)) I would show "my" izula attempt. This was my first time at working my own knife design with the help of some friends. My blade blank was made by Bryan Breeden, the handle work was done by me, and the sheath was made by Jeff H. The Breeden is 1/2 as thick as the izula, 3" blade (legal carry here in CO,) 4.25" handle for the bigger paws, and done in O1 hardened by Bryan. Both knives will be my edc choice for fix blades. Btw, the camera added the nice patina to the Breeden (not really there.)

Thanks to Jeff, RAT, Bryan Breeden, Jeff H., and everyone else for helping guide me!!!:D

Tony--how does the gun blue knife cut? Do you notice a difference between it and the coated blades?

I took the bluing off of my Izula proto. A nice patina is starting here and there but it's been in a protected environment mostly lately.

Here are the initial pics:

And my Tan Izula is in! :D I didn't get the kit with this one, I'll do that with black or green - or both. ;)

I am Izula 165.

yes. almost a full flat grind on the production models though

Actually there is a little bit of flat under the spine so it's not completely full. I sort of disagree with knife terminology when it comes to saber and flat since "flat" in my line of machine shop work means that it is not concave or "hollow" and may or may not extend all the way to the spine. Flat in knife terminology means it's flat and goes all the way to the spine. So if that's the case then the Izula is not truly a flat grind for all the purists? What the hell, it's a nice knife even if we put a 3-step Russian convex grind on it, eh?

Jeff,

I also noticed that my production Tan Izula as actually a bit thinner than the Izula Proto - I haven't had a chance to measure it.

Regardless, I like them both.

The Tan Izula has been with me since I got it in.

I had cord wrapped the proto (didn't get a pic) and pulled the wrap off and can't remember how I went around the transition from the handle cut out to the hole - I shouldn't have done it because it looked good. I'll try and get it again and give you a pic.

Great blades. Got mine for Christmas too!

Thanks for everything all year. Happy Holidays and New Year to you, Mike, and Shon.

Just got my black Izula the other day. Just wanted to say that the RAT team is top notch. Great knife and can't wait for the SERE to come. Thanks again guys.

Thanks RAT and KSF. Now I have a sweet little fixed-blade that's safe for work.

The belly on this little blade makes it cut like a much bigger knife. Factor in the lack of weight and the slick sheath - IMO RAT hit this one out of the park.

Great job on putting this design together. I just ordered one that should arrive some time after Christmas. Can't wait.

Question -> Are there still any prototypes out there? What decisions/factors go into the changes from the prototypes to production? (thickness changed, blade grind changed) Just curious. Thanks !
