izula or h.e.s.t?

Have and love both. For me, concealed in light clothes the Izula, cold weather/heavier clothes the HEST. Of course, the Izula is still easier to carry no matter what you're wearing.

The Izula is a lot easier to conceal, as it is a smaller knife. The rounded 'pommel' makes it friendlier to clothes. I would have to think that carrying a HEST under a shirt, sweatshirt or jacket would invite damage to said shirt, sweatshirt or jacket, (or skin) with the pointed prybar-pommel, but I'll leave that to those who have them, to discuss.

I have to admit that this is a little like trying to figure out what gun to carry. I have an airweight snubby revolver that is VERY easy to conceal because of it's size and weight. But it lacks in utility next to my full-size 1911 or 9mm pistol, which are obviously harder to conceal. I'm physically large enough to make a full-size pistol disappear with the right holster and clothes.

If it's important to have the appropriate knife, you just need to figure out what to wear, and how to carry said knife. If the tool is important enough, the proper question is, 'How do I dress or carry the tool in such a way that it's concealed and comfortable'.

Just my $.02. YMMV.

Nothing wrong with the HEST, but the Izula is going to be the better all around choice. That's my vote anyway.

I love the izula it goes pretty much everywhere I go, but I like what Ive heard about the hest too.

Both are good carry-able concealable knives. I can neck either with no problem. I opt for the Izula though. 1) If I get in a car wreck or something I don't want to die because a pry-bar punctured my lung. 2) As was already mentioned, I feel the Izula with its not prybar and not bottle opener is just a plain ol' friendlier looking knife. Someone recommended waiting for the Izula II, I like the one just fine, but the full micarta slabs beckon me. I love the feel of the ones on the H.E.S.T.

God bless,
Adam

I posted that pic after riding 91 miles thru woods, rocks, trails, etc...
on a dirt bike last weekend....
with the Izzy on my neck, under the chest protector.

I love my HEST...but NO WAY I'm doing that kind of riding with the HEST's prybar!

If I wore "regular clothes" riding, I'd wear the HEST on my hip...but we wear true MX gear, so no belt.

Both have their place, that's for sure. :)

I'll weigh in on this, although I have no HEST experience so I'll just tell you what I know about my Izula so far...

I've had it for just over a year now, and it has replaced every folder I own for an EDC blade. My line of work is mostly outdoors/machinery stuff. Work and live on a farm, and I have also worked on a state park for the past several summers. My Izula has been my primary fishing and hunting knife for the past year. Not a butchering or filleting knife for sure, but for field dressing and skinning it can't be beat. It is perfectly adequate for processing small game though.

It has taken all abuse I have thrown at it on the farm, including light prying, cutting everything from bale twine to soybean stalks plugging the combine to hydraulic hoses and it has not chipped or rolled an edge. I have also cut root balls, silt fence, erosion matting/geotextile, and all sorts of other unmentionable stuff.

I also use it all the time in the kitchen on the basis of handiness. It makes a fine paring knife. Have used it to prepare countless meats and veggies.

I have carried it as a primary backpacking/hiking knife on a few occasions and it did not leave me underknifed, I feel (although I usually carry a 3 along on most hiking/hunting trips, as the extra length is often appreciated there).

Did put the scales on it earlier this year, and that seems to have done well to it as an all-around EDC. The scales are just slightly thicker than the sheath and add a lot of comfort during use.
